Assistant Professor in Egyptian Language

Temporary cover: This post is fixed-term until 30 September 2024 or the return of the post holder, whichever is the earlier.

The Department of Archaeology is seeking to appoint a temporary University Assistant Professor in Egyptian Language, to start from 1st September and no later than 1st October 2023. The contract will end on 30th September 2024. The successful candidate will be active in research and committed to teach in Egyptian Language.

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and teaching Egyptian Language for the Archaeology and Egyptology Tripos and MPhil degrees. They will be responsible for three papers taught to both undergraduates and MPhil students:

  • Introductory Egyptian Language
  • Middle Egyptian Texts
  • Old and Late Egyptian Texts

Moreover, they are expected to contribute and enhance the research profile of Cambridge Archaeology, recognized as a world leader in Archaeology. Other responsibilities include assessment and examining and supervision of undergraduate and MPhil dissertations, and contribution to relevant administrative activities of the Department.

Candidates will need to show evidence of the following qualifications, skills, and experience:

  • Excellent first degree and a doctorate (or clear evidence that completion of such a doctorate is imminent) in a relevant field.
  • Evidence of ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Egyptian language.
  • Potential to engage in internationally outstanding research and scholarly activity, evidenced through publications appropriate to career stage.
  • Ability to play an effective role in the life and work of the Department.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with academic colleagues and support staff.
  • Ability to work as a willing and effective contributor on Departmental committees and work groups.
