What are you going to do

You will teach in a dynamic context with ample opportunities for the development of innovative teaching methods within the Literary and Cultural Analysis (LCA) capacity group within the Department of Literary Studies and Linguistics: Literary Studies - University of Amsterdam (uva.nl). Your research will be part of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis: https://asca.uva.nl/, one of the five research schools of the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research.

Combining perspectives from Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies, Literary and Cultural Analysis is dedicated to research and teaching on contemporary culture, the arts, and literature at the intersection of politics and philosophy. We try to make sense of and reflect on works of literature, art, and (popular) culture in close relation to contemporary controversies and developments. We draw from and develop theories rooted in experience (gender and queer studies, disability studies, affect and memory studies), environment and world (environmental humanities, post- and decolonial studies, world literature, infrastructure studies, media archeology) and interdisciplinary analysis (cultural studies, comparative literature, continental philosophy). Central to our programs is the hands-on engagement – through concept-driven close readings – with concrete cultural objects from Global Norths and Global Souths: visual art; films; poems; novels; fashion; television series; art installations; social media; and performances; but also culturally significant phenomena such as social movements and environmental or technological transformations. The Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) is home to more than 110 researchers and more than 120 PhD candidates, and conducts world-leading research in Cultural Analysis. ASCA members share a commitment to studying culture in all its forms and expressions within an interdisciplinary framework, and to maintaining a close connection with contemporary cultural and political debates.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • conducting independent research in the field of Literary and Cultural Analysis, resulting in publications in peer-reviewed journals or (edited) books;
  • pursuing external funding for research from national and European research councils;
  • contributing to and developing national and international research networks, and other forms of cooperation;
  • contributing to the research activities of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis;
  • developing, coordinating and teaching courses in the Literary and Cultural Analysis BA program, the Comparative Literature and Comparative Cultural Analysis MA programs, and the Cultural Analysis and Literary Studies research-MA programs (all taught in English; for details, see: https://studiegids.uva.nl/xmlpages/page/2022-2023);
  • supervising Bachelor and (research)Master theses and tutoring students; co-supervising PhD theses;
  • actively contributing to the development of teaching programmes, specifically to make them more inclusive;
  • taking part in committees and working groups, and carrying out administrative tasks at the level of the capacity group, the department and the Faculty of Humanities.

What do you have to offer

In your research, you intervene in innovative ways in debates relevant to Literary and Cultural Analysis. Your research practice is fundamentally interdisciplinary, engages with different media and includes detailed, theoretically informed analyses of concrete cultural objects and phenomena, ideally from different parts of the world. You enjoy developing and teaching modules inspired by this research practice. You are willing to teach on cultural objects/phenomena and theories beyond your own research focus, and thrive in interdisciplinary teams of teachers and researchers. You are committed to fostering an inclusive classroom.

Your experience and profile demonstrate the following:

  • a PhD in Cultural Analysis, Literary Studies or a related field (applications from candidates who can show that they will obtain their PhD by the end of 2022 and who meet the other criteria are welcome);
  • an international academic network;
  • peer-reviewed publications;
  • affinity with interdisciplinary research;
  • experience with and/or concrete plans for applying for NWO/ERC funding and/or other external research grants;
  • relevant teaching experience at BA and (research)MA level;
  • excellent command of English. If you do not speak Dutch, an active and passive command must be acquired within two years and the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II must be passed;
  • experience with digital/online teaching methods;
  • strong organizational skills and the ability to work in a team.

Research and teaching experience in (one of) the following areas will be considered a plus:

  • East and Southeast Asian cultures
  • West and East African cultures
  • disability studies

Research that entails collaboration with non-academic institutions and communities in the Netherlands, Europe, and beyond, and aims to have impact beyond academic contexts, is highly welcome.

What can we offer you

We offer permanent employment upon a satisfactory evaluation following a temporary employment contract of a maximum of 18 months with a probationary period of two months. If you already have an employment contract with the UvA, we offer permanent employment upon a satisfactory evaluation following a temporary employment contract of a maximum of 12 months. The employment is for 38 hours per week. Preferred starting date is 01 January 2023.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week, ranges between € 3,974 (scale 11) to € 6,181 (scale 12) dependent on relevant experience. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
