The Saxo Institute, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in classical archaeology. The position is a permanent, full-time appointment.
The successful candidate will complement our collegial environment with a dynamic research profile in Greek or Roman archaeology, with experience in digital methods and their application in teaching and research.
We welcome applications from candidates with diverse theoretical approaches and research methodologies. Current research at the Saxo Institute spans visual culture, landscape, technology and production, history of archaeology, and reception studies, including archaeological fieldwork and museum studies.
The tenure-track assistant professor will contribute to the institute’s research activities, including seminar series and research clusters. The six-year tenure-track period requires a research plan that complements and strengthens the archaeology profile at Saxo Institute and UCPH more broadly.
Additional responsibilities include:
Teaching classical archaeology at the BA and MA levels, including courses on the early geometric to late imperial Roman period
Introductory and theoretical/methodological courses, partly or wholly co-taught with prehistoric archaeology programs
Contributing to research dissemination in the public sphere
Administrative duties, supervision, and participation in faculty activities
The tenure-track position is six years, fixed-term, combining research and teaching. The appointee must:
Complete a mandatory teacher-training course for assistant professors
Conduct research-based publishing and participate in faculty activities
Teach, supervise, and examine undergraduate and graduate students
Contribute to administrative and public dissemination tasks
Assessment emphasizes equal weight for teaching and research competencies, including research collaboration and organization.
PhD or equivalent research qualification
Documented, internationally competitive research
Teaching experience and qualifications are advantageous
Outreach qualifications, including external funding potential, will be considered
Non-Danish-speaking appointees are expected to acquire Danish proficiency within 3–6 years
Assessment criteria: Research, teaching, societal impact, organizational contribution, external funding, and leadership.

Up to five publications for assessment, with at least two published within the last five years
Signed statements from co-authors detailing individual contributions, if applicable
Accepted languages for application materials: English, German, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish
Applications are assessed by the Head of Institute and an Appointment Committee
Expert assessment committee evaluates selected applicants
Applicants may comment on parts of the assessment relevant to themselves
Security screening may be conducted for international research collaboration
Salary per Ministry of Finance/AC agreement: starting at DKK 40,600/month (~EUR 5,400) + 18.07% pension contribution
Annual salary supplements negotiable
