The Chemical and Fuel Cycle Technologies division is seeking a Chemical Engineer to provide technical, mechanical, and facility maintenance support to an R&D team conducting use-inspired research to develop molten salt-based processes for nuclear and decarbonization applications. With mentoring, the employee will maintain and repair mechanical components, equipment, systems, electromechanical, and electronic controls used in controlled-atmosphere glovebox systems containing radiological materials. The employee will assist in the development of new and improved processes, design of chemical control & measurement systems, sampling, transfer, and measurement activities with radioactive material. Specific tasks will include maintenance of inert atmosphere gloveboxes in which activities are conducted; troubleshooting; development and maintenance of control and monitoring equipment and instruments used for salt properties measurements, pyrochemical separation and recovery processes, material corrosion studies; assisting in the design, fabrication, and evaluation of electrochemical cells used for complex molten salt systems; and safe handling of radioactive materials in glovebox facilities. Position Requirements Skill in devising, performing, and evaluating experiments and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Knowledge of computer applications for data acquisition, analysis and modeling chemical systems. Good written and oral communication skills and interpersonal relationship skills. Understanding of safe laboratory practices and adherence to laboratory, DOE, and federal regulations. General knowledge of the principles of chemistry, chemical engineering, and chemical technology. To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract. This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in chemical engineering, materials science, nuclear engineering, natural science or related field at the bachelor’s degree level with zero to three years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
