About the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders Program
The Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders program is a one-time initiative designed to support Canadian institutions in attracting internationally based Early Career Researchers to Canada.
Emerging Leaders will receive:
- Research funding of CAD $100,000 per year for six years, with the possibility of an additional six-year extension.
- Institutional support to advance transformative research.
- Opportunities to build partnerships across sectors and international borders.
- Support for translating research into applications and impacts that benefit Canada and the global community.
Position Description
The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream Assistant Professor position.
The successful candidate will conduct transformational research aligned with one or more of the following Canadian strategic priority areas:
- Advanced digital technologies (Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Technologies, Cybersecurity)
- Environment, Climate Resilience, and the Arctic
The nominee's research must clearly align with one or more of these strategic priority areas.
The appointment is expected to begin on 1 July 2027.
Eligibility
Emerging Leaders Awards are intended for exceptional early career researchers.
Applicants must:
- Be within five years (minus eligible career delays) of the start date of their first independent research appointment.
- Eligible delays include maternity, parental, medical, and bereavement leave.
- Eligible delays are credited as twice the amount of leave taken.
- Professional leave (such as sabbatical, training, or administrative appointments) is not considered an eligible delay.
Research Areas
The Department seeks candidates conducting research broadly within Electrical and Computer Engineering, with particular interest in:
- AI for Science
- AI for Engineering
- Artificial Intelligence across all Electrical and Computer Engineering disciplines
Particular interest will be given to candidates with expertise in AI for Good, including responsible AI applications addressing meaningful societal challenges such as:
- Ecology
- Sustainability
- Environmental protection
The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with initiatives including the Impact+ Research Chair in AI for Ecology, Biodiversity, and Conservation and contribute to research translation and real-world impact.
Requirements and Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- A PhDin:A demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.
- Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Computer Science
- Or a closely related discipline.
- An established independent research program.
- Strong potential for impactful collaborative research.
Applicants must demonstrate internationally competitive research excellence appropriate to their career stage through evidence such as:
- Publications in leading journals.
- A strong research pipeline.
- Presentations at major conferences.
- Awards and recognitions.
- Strong letters of recommendation from distinguished referees.
Teaching Qualifications
Applicants must demonstrate excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching through a teaching dossier that may include:
- Teaching statement.
- Previous teaching experience.
- Workshops or seminars delivered.
- Student mentorship.
- Conference presentations or posters.
- Teaching assistant or course instructor experience.
- Sample course syllabi.
- Teaching evaluations.
- Other evidence of outstanding teaching performance.
Professional or lived experiences that enhance the ability to teach a diverse student population are highly valued.

Salary
- Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
- The upper end of the salary range exceeds CAD $200,000 per annum.
- Additional negotiations may be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
