Lund University School of Economics and Management

Department of Statistics

The Department of Statistics employs about 15 researchers, teachers, doctoral students, and other staff. We conduct research in several areas:

  • analysis of high-dimensional data
  • Bayesian methods
  • spatial-temporal models
  • non-Gaussian modeling
  • applied research in social science
  • stochastic models
  • computational statistics

We are looking for an up-and-coming researcher to take up a position as Assistant Professor in statistics with a focus on data science.


What we offer the successful candidate

You have the opportunity to start as an assistant professor (associate senior lecturer) as part of Lund University Programme for Global Excellence.

We are looking for a promising, academically young researcher who can build and lead research in high-dimensional statistical methods for data-rich inference.

As an Assistant Professor you will:

  • develop your qualifications over 4 years
  • be eligible for promotion to senior lecturer (tenure-track)
  • receive 5 weeks of teaching training
  • access Swedish language courses
  • receive relocation and family support
  • be eligible for nomination to Swedish Research Council funding

Duties – what we expect from you

You will divide your time between:

  • 60% research
  • 40% teaching

Research duties:

  • publish scientific papers
  • attend conferences
  • apply for research funding
  • build research networks
  • organize workshops
  • supervise PhD students

Teaching duties:

  • teach courses in data science, including:develop new courses
    • Bayesian methods
    • Advanced Machine Learning
    • Deep Learning and AI methods
  • teach at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level
  • supervise theses

Qualifications for employment

You must hold a PhD or equivalent in:

  • statistics
  • mathematical statistics
  • biostatistics
  • data science

Preference is given to candidates who obtained their PhD within the last 5 years (with exceptions for parental leave, illness, etc.).


Requirements – what you must have

  • ability to conduct high-quality research
  • good teaching ability
  • recent international research experience (outside Sweden)
  • research project plan (max 4 pages, high-dimensional statistics focus)
  • documented leadership skills
  • good communication skills
  • excellent English (spoken and written)
  • willingness to learn Swedish
  • no Swedish salary/grant since 31 Dec 2022

  • experience obtaining external research funding

Form of employment

Fixed-term position: 4 years
(with possibility of promotion to senior lecturer)


Promotion to senior lecturer

To be promoted, candidates must demonstrate:

Research

  • development within field
  • strong international standing
  • at least 4 accepted publications in Norwegian List journals
  • active participation in seminars and conferences
  • at least 2 external grant applications

Teaching

  • strong teaching ability and development
  • course development contributions
  • at least 1700 teaching hours
  • completed teaching training (5 weeks)

Supervision

  • co-supervision of PhD students
  • supervision training course

Outreach

  • collaboration outside academia
  • dissemination of research

Leadership

  • leadership in conferences/workshops/seminars
  • administrative and committee work
