THE OPPORTUNITIES
Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level with expertise and experience in one or more of the following areas: (1) Quantum Devices; (2) Quantum Systems; (3) radio-frequency, microwave, and millimeter-wave components, analog/mixed signal subsystems or high-speed integrated circuits; (4) photonic devices; with a strong focus on quantum-enhanced sensing and imaging, quantum communications, quantum networking, quantum information science, quantum computing architectures and applications such as cryptography, cybersecurity, and optimization.
The successful candidate will lead an innovative research program aimed at advancing state-of-the-art devices that are integral to the realization of scalable quantum technologies. Key areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the design and development of integrated or heterogeneously integrated electronic and photonic devices supporting qubit control and readout systems, quantum sensors, quantum communication platforms, as well as the associated instrumentation and metrology systems required for their testing and operation; and co-designed solutions generated with multidisciplinary teams supporting quantum computing and sensing applications, such as room temperature and cryogenic microwave front-ends and components, photonic integrated circuits, quantum memories, electronic backends, and high-density interconnects. Applicants with a proven track record of working with semiconductor or integrated photonics platforms—alongside established collaborations with affiliated foundries, are highly sought after. The role will emphasize the co-design of multidisciplinary solutions for quantum computing and sensing architectures.
The selected candidates will have the opportunity to leverage the resources available through the Mines Shared Instrumentation Facilities (SIF) and clean rooms for in-house prototype fabrication. Additionally, they will be encouraged to foster strong partnerships with industry and government agencies to drive domestic research and manufacturing of semiconductor technologies.
The state of Colorado has emerged as a leading hub for quantum technology. With a unique convergence of academic, governmental, and private sector resources in Colorado has led to a consortium, Elevate Quantum (https://www.elevatequantum.org/), which has recently secured federal and state support to help lead the US quantum technology efforts. Colorado's vibrant ecosystem in high-tech, coupled with government investment and collaborations between academia and industry, has already attracted many leading quantum companies and researchers to the area. Critical to achieving the Elevate Quantum vision is the Quantum COmmons, a 70-acre site owned by Mines and dedicated to advancing quantum technology.

Successful applicants will be able to collaborate through joint appointments, joint projects, shared students, etc. with the nearby National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), based in Golden, Colorado and the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder Colorado, only 20 miles away from Mines. Collaboration with other national laboratories and industries is also encouraged.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop a strong externally funded independent research program focused on leading-edge topics.
Establish and maintain an internationally recognized reputation for scholarship with a correspondingly impactful record of publications and invited talks.
Develop and deliver course materials to undergraduate and graduate students in traditional, hybrid, and/or online formats, demonstrating teaching excellence.
Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
Collaborate across campus and with external collaborators, and contribute to breakthroughs in the area of applications of your research.
Contribute to both institutional and external professional service.
Cultivate and promote an accessible, inclusive, and diverse Mines community through recruiting, mentorship, and service.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline from an accredited program by the time of appointment.
Demonstrated experience and accomplishments in academia, research lab(s), and/or industry.
Commitment to excellence in teaching and curriculum development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Integrity, energy, and a passion for education and research.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Commitment and ability to use instructional techniques and technology for effective teaching.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated record of successful teaching and/or research obtained via academic research, college-level teaching and/or industry or national lab experience.
Demonstrated record of research publications in archival journals and conference proceedings.
Demonstrated record of externally funded research program.
Experience of working with quantum or integrated photonics platforms.
Demonstrated ability to perform scholarship, teaching, and service at a level commensurate with the Mines standards for a tenure-track Assistant Professor rank.

PAY RANGE
Mines is offering an academic year salary rate of $102,300 - $116,700. This salary may be further supplemented during summer and winter research periods, using funds drawn from external grants or other sources.
Mines takes into consideration a combination of the candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
