Assistant Professor (W2 Tenure Track) for Human Computer Interaction

starting as soon as possible.

We are looking for an ambitious scientific talent with an excellent scientific profile, documented by an outstanding pertinent doctorate and by publications at top international conferences and in academic journals. Promising potential for cooperation is also highly desirable; this can be demonstrated, e.g., by joint publications with (international) colleagues or by successful joint projects. Commitment to teaching in our bachelor and master programs in computer science is of importance. Participation in academic governance is expected.

The candidate’s documented expertise shall concern important current and future challenges of human-computer interaction for a diverse user spectrum such as, e.g., AR/VR, intelligent or multimodal interaction, special modalities such as haptics or brain-computer interfaces, human-computer collaboration, interaction with big data or HCI for social computing. We expect that the candidate’s research and teaching portfolio covers the whole spectrum of HCI research, such as elicitation and design as well as (empirical) evaluation methods. As the professorship is anchored in computer science, the design and implementation of innovative interaction concepts as well as their evaluation are core requirements.

A written teaching and research concept shall be submitted; it shall also include cooperation intentions at our department and university.

The assistant professorship is designated as a qualification professorship according to § 64 HHG (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz); it is initially financed as part of a joint federal and state program for the promotion of young researchers (, whose regulations it also adheres to. Accordingly, the maximum period of scientific activities after the PhD degree should not exceed four years. Furthermore, applicants should have completed their PhD degree at a university other than Technical University of Darmstadt or have been scientifically active outside Technical University of Darmstadt for at least two years after the PhD degree.

Remuneration follows the German W-Besoldung at level W2 Hessisches Besoldungsgesetz. The position is initially limited to six years. The position comes with the option of a tenured professorship after a successfully completed tenure process. The tenure process, which can be initiated one and a half years before the end of the assistant professorship, evaluates the corresponding achievements in research and teaching.
