Overview

The Assistant Director of Curriculum and Instructor Development will play a key leadership role within the Prehospital and Emergency Training Division (PETD) at the University of Miami Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation in Medical Education. This faculty member will be responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of educational curricula and instructor training programs for prehospital and emergency care providers.

The position requires expertise in curriculum development, instructor training, simulation-based education, and adult learning methodologies. The Assistant Director will work collaboratively with faculty, simulation specialists, healthcare professionals, and external stakeholders to ensure that the educational programs meet the highest standards.


Required Expertise

  1. Completion of a Residency and/or Fellowship in Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, Critical Care, or related acute care medical field, with at least 3 years of clinical practice experience.

  2. Completion of a Simulation Education or Medical Education Fellowship and/or a Master’s or Doctoral degree in Health Professions Education or related discipline.

  3. Experience in teaching and curriculum development in Emergency Medicine in UME, GME, and/or CME.

  4. At least 2 years of experience training emergency healthcare providers, residents, and medical students, including simulation-based training.

  5. Experience in training instructors, faculty development, and program evaluation.

  6. Familiarity with accreditation requirements, competency-based training models, and quality assurance processes.

  7. Research experience in healthcare education and/or simulation, or training in health sciences education research.

First Year Salary Range: Dependent on prior experience, faculty rank, and AAMC Faculty Salary Benchmarks (to be paid by the Gordon Center).

Responsibilities

I. Curriculum Development

  • Assist the PETD Director in developing, implementing, evaluating, and enhancing curricula for prehospital and emergency medical training programs.

  • Conduct needs assessments, align curricula with evidence-based practices, and integrate cutting-edge educational technologies.

  • Design simulation-based learning, case-based scenarios, and interactive approaches using standardized patients, task trainers, and virtual simulators.

  • Collaborate with partners at UHealth, Miller School of Medicine, and state/national agencies.

  • Oversee curriculum quality assurance and outcomes evaluation.

  • Disseminate curricular programs at institutional, state, national, and international levels.

II. Digital Technology and Simulation Development

  • Integrate digital resources such as adaptive learning, mixed/augmented/virtual reality.

  • Develop innovative simulation software applications for immersive learning.

  • Support distance learning and virtual methodologies statewide, nationally, and globally.

  • Assist in managing standardized patient, task trainers, and simulation programs.

III. Teaching

  • Teach prehospital and hospital emergency personnel across PETD courses.

  • Teach medical students, residents, and nurses in emergency medicine, cardiology, and neurology rotations.

  • Serve as instructor in Gordon Center conferences, faculty development programs, and national/international workshops.

IV. Instructor and Faculty Development

  • Develop and evaluate comprehensive instructor and faculty development programs.

  • Mentor instructors and faculty in simulation, facilitation, and student engagement.

  • Promote adaptive learning, competency-based training, and interprofessional strategies.

  • Contribute to the Gordon Center Fellowship in Simulation and Medical Education.

V. Program Management and Accreditation

  • Support PETD program management, including scheduling, staffing, and compliance.

  • Expand statewide training programs in collaboration with health systems, EMS agencies, and professional organizations.

  • Ensure compliance with CAPCE, ANCC, ACCME, AHA, NAEMSE, and Florida Boards of EMS and Nursing.

  • Represent Gordon Center at conferences and committees.

VI. Outcomes Research and Grant Funding

  • Collaborate on educational research design, implementation, and dissemination.

  • Apply for intramural and extramural funding.

  • Publish and present findings at professional venues.

VII. Administration

  • Assist with PETD operations, personnel management, recruitment, hiring, and training.

  • Support evaluation processes, reporting, and stakeholder relationships.

VIII. Public Relations and Collaboration

  • Engage with state/federal agencies, foundations, donors, and community stakeholders.

  • Support program marketing, communications, and outreach.

  • Develop content for the Gordon Center website and social media.

IX. Community Service

  • Participate in community education events and host local school groups.

X. Patient Care and Clinical Shadowing

  • Maintain clinical skills through limited patient care or shadowing (≤10%).

XI. Department of Medical Education Service

  • Participate in departmental activities (Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs, workshops).

  • Serve on the Medical Education Scholarship Committee.

  • Support the Academy of Medical Education Scholars through mentorship, professional development, and peer evaluation.


Working Conditions & Schedule

  • Full-time faculty position based at the University of Miami Gordon Center in Miami, Florida.

  • May require intermittent travel for training, conferences, and faculty development programs.

  • Some evening and weekend availability may be necessary.
