DUTIES

Duties

Teaching laboratory sessions and lectures in a variety of subjects in the Veterinary Technology program to meet the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association curriculum standards and accreditation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and delivering lecture and laboratory material
  • Mentoring and assessing students which includes fostering critical thinking & problem-solving skills
  • Communication with faculty, students, and program assistants
  • Creating and updating of course curriculum.
  • Delivery of course material as chosen by the program.
  • Includes grading and posting of grades.
  • Ensuring students have completed the essential skills associated with the course and have signed them off in the essential skills book.
  • Responsible for hospital management and animal care including medical records. 
  • On call care for animals housed at TRU both on-campus (dogs, cats, rodents) and at the TRU farm (horses, llamas, sheep, goats, cattle and chickens)
  • Actively participate in department faculty meetings and duties such as: student applications and admission, coordinating, sitting on departmental and university committees, and/or other service duties within the university
  • Promote the VTEC program and TRU graduates within the veterinary community and to the public.
  • Participate in continuing education pertinent to the position duties.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Registered Veterinary Technologist
  • Member in good standing with the BCVTA
  • Experience teaching in a veterinary technology program
  • Professional development in the veterinary field and academia 
  • Minimum of 5 years' clinical experience within the last 10 years
  • Knowledgeable and able to teach across a broad range of veterinary technology curricula with interests in, but not limited to: veterinary office management, dentistry, parasitology, shelter medicine and practicum placements
  • Experience with small animal dentistry including blocks and radiography
  • Experience with animal management and acquisition
  • Experience in facility management and equipment maintenance
  • Evidence of effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with various computer programs; including Word, Excel and Moodle
  • Comfortable creating and presenting with power point
  • Experience public speaking
  • Flexible and collegial attitude regarding workload assignments
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Evidence of classroom experience with good presentational skills
  • Self-motivated, detail oriented, able to multitask and work with deadlines
