POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time Teaching Stream position in General Sociology.

The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Sociology or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching.

We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths.

Candidates must have:

  • Teaching experience in a degree-granting program.
  • Experience with lecture preparation and delivery.
  • Experience with curriculum development.
  • Experience developing online course materials and lectures.
  • A demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry.
  • A demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Strong skills in sociological research methods.
  • A commitment to teaching sociology as an empirically grounded social science.
  • Experience with, and demonstrated excellence in, teaching both:
    • Large lecture courses.
    • Small discussion-based sociology courses (preferred).

Evidence of excellence in teaching and commitment to pedagogical inquiry will be demonstrated through:

  • Teaching accomplishments.
  • Awards and recognitions.
  • Presentations at significant conferences.
  • A comprehensive teaching dossier.
  • Strong letters of reference.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be assigned:

  • Teaching responsibilities.
  • Service responsibilities.

HIRING SALARY RANGE

The salary range is CAD $113,300–$140,000 per year, depending on experience.

Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
