Job Description:

The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) at Iowa State University is accepting applications for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Sustainable Food Packaging. The position entails responsibilities in research (65%), teaching (30%), and service (5%). The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program with external funding, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with current FSHN faculty in broadening the sustainability scope of food, food waste, and packaging systems. Additionally, the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching core curriculum courses in food science, including food chemistry, food analysis, and food processing/engineering. Institutional service to the department, college, and university is also expected.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Food Science, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Packaging, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field

  • Demonstrated evidence of scholarly productivity such as publications and grant writing

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise and background in food packaging with a focus on sustainability

  • Demonstrated evidence of student-centered teaching and knowledge of educational technology

  • Demonstrated evidence of effective communication

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and supervise junior scientists effectively

  • Demonstrated evidence of effective teaching in core food science courses

The Department offers comprehensive undergraduate programs in Food Science, Culinary Food Science, Nutritional Science, Dietetics, Diet and Exercise, and Nursing. It also provides graduate programs in Food Science and Technology, Dietetics, and Diet and Exercise, and supports interdepartmental graduate programs in Microbiology, Nutritional Science, and Toxicology. These facilities have dedicated packaging resources and operate out of 10 laboratories with industry support. The state-of-the-art laboratories feature pilot-scale packaging manufacturing equipment, material waste processing equipment, simulation space for hot/cold display cases, and advanced instrumentation for packaging analysis and characterization.
