The School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS) at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB) seeks applicants for a full-time (100%) Assistant Teaching Professor (9-month service period) position in Rhetoric and Composition. The successful applicant will bring to their work expertise in Latinx, Black, or Indigenous rhetorics and/or Professional-Technical Writing, and should ideally integrate under-represented, minority rhetorics into their teaching and scholarship. They will join a faculty committed to teaching students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds with various levels of academic preparation, and to designing writing programs for that student population. The normal teaching load for the Teaching Professor track in IAS is 9 courses over 3 quarters, with 2 annual releases for service and scholarly/professional engagement. The start date is September 16, 2021.

When hired through a national search, teaching assistant professors are eligible for renewable multi-year appointments, promotion, and sabbatical, among other benefits available to full-time UW faculty members.  First-year writing faculty have appointments in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS), while teaching in the First Year and Pre-Major Programs (FYPP). FYPP is the home of the campus’s pre-major students and first-year curriculum, including our first-year writing courses. The FYPP mission is to support the successful transition to college of First Year and Pre-Major students and to provide the foundation on which they will continue scholarly and professional development.  It commits us to creating an inclusive and ethically responsible learning environment.  Faculty may also teach occasional upper-division courses in IAS.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements for the position include:

  • Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or related field (or foreign equivalent) required by time of appointment  
  • Demonstrated commitment to best practices in composition studies
  • Three years of college-level teaching experience
  • Demonstrated success in teaching first-year composition to students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds with varying levels of academic preparation
  • Demonstrated ability to address questions of diversity, equity and inclusion in courses and scholarship
  • Expertise in working with diverse student populations

Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to:

  • Expertise in Latinx, Black, or Indigenous rhetorics, and/or Professional-Technical Writing
  • Experience integrating under-represented, minority rhetorics into their teaching and scholarship, specifically for first-year curricula
  • Experience with interdisciplinary curricula
  • Experience in writing program design
