Department of Biological and Environmental Science, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science at the University of Jyväskylä is currently seeking to recruit a candidate for the position of


The position starts on January 2, 2023 or as agreed. The position of an assistant professor is for a fixed term of three to five years, and the position of an associate professor is for a fixed term of five years (according to the tenure track model). At the conclusion of each fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the employee's qualifications for promotionto the next level (associate/full professor).

The aim of recruiting an assistant professor at the Department of Biological and Environmental Science is to strengthen research in environmental science that measures and assesses human-caused environmental risks and brings solutions to them. This assistant professorship on environmental chemistry and analytics is an important part of large-scale environmental research, which is strongly linked to the faculty's strategic focus on the sustainable use of natural resources/ resource wisdom, e.g. through the circular economy theme. The Department of Biological and Environmental Science already has world-class research expertise and equipment to support the work of an assistant professor to be recruited. With the help of recruitment, we will be able to increase business cooperation and expand the funding base for external funding.

Qualifications we are looking for

Responsibilities of assistant/associate professors include research and teaching related to their research area. The person appointed to the position is expected to carry out internationally high-level research in Environmental Science. We are primarily looking for candidates from the research field of Environmental Chemistry and Environmental Analytics. The applicant must present how he / she promotes research activities in Environmental Chemistry and Environmental Analysis and related instrumentation at the department. Expertise on the presence and environmental effects of inorganic and / or organic contaminants and biomolecules in natural and man-made environments is considered an advantage.

The teaching responsibilities of assistant/associate professors include lectures and other courses of Environmental Science ranging from basic courses to postgraduate ones. The tasks include advising students and supervising theses at the bachelor, master, and postgraduate levels. Additionally, assistant/associate professors are involved in the societal interaction as experts. The assistant/associate professor participates in managerial research and administrative tasks, continuous development of education, acquisition of research funding, and demanding specialist tasks.

Candidates should have an excellent record of conducting and publishing scientific research, establishing international networks, acquiring external funding, and teaching.   1. A cover / motivation letter.
  2. Curriculum vitae, including personal ORCID ID (A template from The Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity is preferred). The CV is strictly limited to four (4) pages.
  3. A numbered list of all scientific publications and other publications showing the applicant’s ability and merits
  4. A maximum of five (5) main publications, numbered in accordance with the list of publications
  5. A brief description of the applicant’s merits related to research, research management and funding and a research plan for the position, and a vision of how the applicant’s activities complement those in the Department of Biological and Environmental Science (total max 4 pages).
  6. Portfolio of teaching credits including the vision how to develop teaching of Environmental Sciences and a teaching philosophy following the structure according to the JYU instructions (max. 3 pages).
