We are seeking a Tenure Assistant/Associate Professor in the philosophy of education, particularly in education for democracy. You will join a nationally and internationally recognized team of philosophical and social studies of education at the Faculty of Education. Job description

Your research will contribute to theoretical and philosophical perspectives on education for democracy. You will carry out teaching at the Faculty of Education in the area of philosophical and societal contexts of education. You will be expected to publish in leading international journals of your research field, acquire external research funding, supervise doctoral students and be an active member of the international academic community. You are expected to build research collaboration within the Faculty of Education and with external research partners. We appreciate the ability to foster dialogue between different philosophical traditions and between philosophical and empirical studies on education.

The position, at the Faculty of Education, University of Oulu, will be filled from 1.1.2022, or, as soon as possible after this date.

What you can offer

Our tenure track targets exceptionally talented researchers with the high potential to advance their career. For Assistant Professor we expect you to have a doctoral degree in a relevant field, the ability to work independently and have teaching skills relevant for the position. To qualify as an Assistant Professor, your doctoral degree needs to have been received no longer than ten years ago.

For Associate Professor we expect you to have an applicable doctoral degree as well as evidence of scientific research and the teaching skills required for the position. You must be able to lead a research group and acquire supplementary research funding. Sufficient and relevant experience in scientific work abroad as well as evidence of international cooperation is required.

The successful candidate is required to have a doctoral degree in a philosophy, theory of education or other relevant field and a strong track record of conducting outstanding international research in the area of the open position, publishing in leading international journals, attracting external funding, supervising doctoral students. The candidate is also expected to have an ability to conduct and lead independent high-profile research in the area of the open position.

In addition to modern research facilities (e.g., LEAF research infrastructure: https://www.oulu.fi/leaf-eng/), we provide benefits such as affordable sport services and salary payments for 12 months/year.The salary of an Assistant Professor will be based on levels 5-6, of an Associate Professor on levels 6-7 of the requirement level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 50% of the basic salary level for the post. The full salary is approximately 3,500 – 4,500 euros per month for an Assistant Professor and 4,000 – 5,200 euros per month for an Associate Professor.

The selection process follows the University of Oulu tenure track guidelines. The process is carried out by a recruitment committee and the candidates are subjected to publication analyses based on their publication lists. The candidates that are considered most suitable by the recruitment committee will also undergo an expert evaluation, assessing the following merits:

- Scientific activities and their reflection in the publication record, scientific presentations, and other recognitions, e.g. awards and patents

- Teaching activities and their evaluation (teaching portfolio; including student’s evaluation)

- Supervision of diploma and doctoral students

- Acquisition of competitive research funds

- International scientific activities and contacts

- Services for the academic community

- Academic and societal relevance and potential of activities

In this key position, the recruited candidate is also expected to reach top scores (5-6 on a scale from 1 to 6 for scientific activity and as the overall score), to be recruited.

Further information

The position is fixed-term for 5 years as of 1.1.2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
