Clinical or Tenure-track Assistant/Associate or Full Professor – Food Animal Ambulatory Medicine

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University (ISU CVM), located in Ames, Iowa, is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, clinical or tenure-track faculty appointment in the area of Food Animal Ambulatory Medicine in the Veterinary Field Services (VFS) section of the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM).
The person in this position will commit most of their time to professional practice and outreach associated with delivering and growing veterinary clinical services to clients of ISU’s VFS unit, while teaching 4th-year veterinary students in the Field Services rotation and other clinically based rotations. This person will participate in the management of Iowa State Fair veterinary services and the associated student clinical rotation and continue to expand mobile swine treatments for show and pet pigs.
DVM or equivalent degree
One year of clinical experience in a food animal veterinary practice
Documented experience working with herd managers, animal care providers, researchers, and/or students at various levels of training
State of Iowa Veterinary License AND Category II veterinary accreditation under the USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Program required on or before the first date of employment
US DEA and State of Iowa Controlled Drug Licensing required on or before the first day of employment
In addition, positions at the following ranks will require:
Clinical Associate Professor
A minimum of 5 years of experience in a progressive, high-quality veterinary medical practice that demonstrates a wide range of clinical responsibilities and patient care
Clinical Professor
A minimum of 10 years of experience in a progressive, high-quality veterinary medical practice that demonstrates a wide range of clinical responsibilities and patient care
Assistant Professor
Evidence of experience conducting research or other scholarly activity
Associate or Full Professor
An established record of experience and scholarship appropriate to each rank at Iowa State University
Additional years of practice experience in a progressive, high-quality food animal production medicine practice that demonstrates a wide range of responsibilities
Additional years of experience teaching professional veterinary students in a clinical setting
An advanced degree in a field related to food animal production medicine
Diplomate or eligibility status (in final year of training program) in a recognized specialty area of veterinary medicine relevant to ambulatory medicine
Experience with the management of a veterinary practice
Have and maintain a valid U.S. state driver’s license and the ability to be authorized to drive University vehicles on or before the first day of employment
The Veterinary Field Services (VFS) unit is a fully ambulatory service that delivers routine farm animal care, production medicine programs, and 24/7 emergency services to farms within a 45-mile radius of Ames, Iowa. The VFS team—comprising faculty veterinarians, residents, interns, and fourth-year veterinary students—provides individual animal and herd health services for beef and dairy cattle, swine, sheep, goats, and camelids. These services are delivered on university and commercial farms using fully equipped mobile veterinary trucks.
The individual in this position may also assist with case management in the ISU Food Animal and Camelid Hospital in the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center. Additional responsibilities could include occasional teaching of undergraduate students in the Animal Science program. There are also opportunities to engage in collaborative research in food supply veterinary medicine.
VDPAM was established in 1997 to strategically expand resources and focus on production animal medicine at the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine. VDPAM comprises approximately 55 faculty members and 150 staff. Our faculty and staff serve food animal agriculture through VFS, the Food Animal and Camelid Hospital, and the ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
