Sunnybrook is a tertiary care hospital in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area with 1.2 million patient visits annually including 64,000 ED visits. It serves as a regional referral centre for diverse specialties, including burns, stroke, cancer, interventional cardiology, neurosurgery, vascular, spinal surgery, and high-risk maternal/neonatal care. It functions as the base hospital for Toronto EMS and is Canada’s largest trauma centre and the first hospital in Canada to be accredited by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 Trauma Centre.
Sunnybrook is a collaborative and collegial group of approximately 45 physicians committed to academic success and clinical excellence. The department prioritizes group wellness and flexible scheduling, reflecting diverse practice patterns and interests such as:

Sunnybrook is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and serves as a core training site for Emergency Medicine residency and fellowship programs. Staff are established leaders in medical education. The site is a lead contributor to residency Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training, and its simulation program supports high-fidelity, interprofessional education and continuing professional development.
The Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, and the Department of Emergency Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre are recruiting qualified academic emergency physicians for up to 8 full-time positions at the rank of:
Assistant Professor
Associate Professor
Full Professor
Successful candidates will hold a Full-Time Clinical Academic appointment at the University of Toronto. The expected start date is July 1, 2027, or a mutually agreed date.
The successful candidate will:
Provide exemplary, efficient, and patient-centred clinical care in a dynamic emergency medicine setting
Supervise and support trainees, including bedside teaching and mentorship
Provide real-time consultation to paramedic teams through the patch program
Contribute to the academic mission through:
Education
Quality improvement
Research
Administrative leadership
MD or equivalent degree
Certification in Emergency Medicine (FRCPC, CCFP-EM, or DABEM)
Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
Strong clinical expertise in emergency medicine
Commitment to teaching excellence
Proficiency in English
Priority consideration may be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents
Estimated annual compensation: $300,000 – $400,000
Remuneration via Alternate Funding Arrangement (AFA) and Alternate Funding Plan (AFP)
