Two positions as Associate Professor in Biological Physics.

Subject description

Research in biological physics at the department is highly interdisciplinary and focuses on using advanced physical techniques e.g. microfluidics, soft lithography, single-cell analysis, optical tweezers and different kinds of microscopy to study biological systems. Data analysis, image processing and signal processing is increasingly aided by artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques. The studied systems include yeasts, bacteria, algae and mammalian cells, as well as physiologically realistic organ-on-chip systems of high relevance for contemporary medical applications. The activities are also closely related to research in complex systems at the department.

Job assignment

The position entails

  • research in the scientific area described above with a focus on experiments.
  • teaching in Swedish and English at preparatory, B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. levels.
  • supervision of B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. students and postdoctors.
  • responsibility for clean-room, preparation lab and cell-culture lab including safety, purchases, education, maintenance and upgrades.

The eligibility for employment as a teacher is stated in chapter 4, sections 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg's employment procedure. Qualifying to be employed is the one who has demonstrated educational skill, has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence or any other skill that is important in the view of the content of the employment and the duties that are to be included.

Firstly, applications will be evaluated by external experts with equal weight given to research and pedagogical merits, which will be evaluated with equal care:

  • Research merits will be judged through publications in leading journals as well as other criteria such as invitations to conferences, international assignments, supervision and demonstrated ability to obtain external competitive research funding.
  • Pedagogical merits will be assessed by documented experience at all levels of academic teaching, the results of course evaluations, educational material developed by the candidate, as well as engagement in activities where knowledge is utilized outside of academia.
  • The extent to which the applicant fits in with and complements existing activities in the department as well as documented ability to collaborate with scientists from different disciplines and stakeholders outside of academia will be given consideration.

The further evaluation of short-listed candidates will be based on trial lectures and interviews. A great importance is then given to personal suitability, including good communication skills and the ability to perform other duties associated with the appointment, cooperate with other faculty members, and contribute positively to the overall environment of the department. The assessment of qualifications and experience will take into account parental leave, sick leave or similar circumstances as stated in the application.
