The Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for an Associate professorship in solid state chemistry and quantum materials discovery. The position is linked to the ESS – lighthouse center “Magnetism and Quantum Materials”. Emphasis is on non-molecular systems.

The Q-MAT center

In conjunction with the upcoming neutron scattering facility, European Spallation Source (ESS) a center with joint efforts toward magnetism and quantum materials has been established having University of Copenhagen as the central hub. Main focus areas are discovery, characterization and modelling of new materials with focus on electronic structure, magnetic and electric properties. The center encompasses more than 40 researchers from 6 major Danish research institutions. The advertised position is in a field,  central for the lighthouse, but new at the department. It is intended as a strong interdisciplinary position bridging chemistry and condensed matter physics. You will be engaged in high-quality publications, grant procurement and experimental outreach in collaboration with other researchers at the Department of Chemistry and in the Q-MAT center.

Job description

For the process of establishing this new direction of research, we are seeking an established researcher with a strong track record in the field. The preferred candidate has demonstrated the ability to attract funding, head a research group, and lead interdisciplinary collaborative research efforts. She or he is an expert in state-of-the-art materials synthesis and single-crystal growth techniques.

As part of the lighthouse it will be your responsibility to conduct research, supervision and teaching at the Department of Chemistry, especially with relevance to the general theme of the lighthouse. You will be expected to design a research portfolio which aligns with this. To a limited extent. the position may also include other duties, such as outreach to society or administrative tasks.

It is a permanent position. University of Copenhagen is furthermore implementing a professor promotional programme, which will provide transparent career tracks.

The position comes with some start-up funding from the lighthouse for establishing experimental facilities and a Ph.D. scholarship.

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for an overall assessment of the candidates.
