The School of Nursing Midwifery and Social Work (NMSW)

The School is a leader in the study of nursing, midwifery, social work and counselling, demonstrating excellence through innovative, creative, and dynamic teaching and research, in a vibrant, interdisciplinary, and engaging environment. The School is committed to conducting academic, research and community partnership programs that are recognised for their excellence in contributing to health and well-being in the community. The School is responsible for a number of programs including the Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Midwifery, Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery dual degree, Master of Nursing Studies, Master of Social Work Studies and the Master of Counselling degrees. It has extensive, well-established partnerships in the hospital, health care, social welfare and disability sectors and a developing cohort of research higher degree students.

In the most recent Shanghai rankings (2020) by subject area nursing/midwifery, University of Queensland (UQ) was ranked 2nd in Australia and 4th in the World. In the most recent Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) ratings UQ received the maximum rating of 5 (“Well above World Standard”) in Nursing, including midwifery and Social Work. UQ was the only Australian University to achieve that rating in the discipline of social work.

About This Opportunity

An opportunity exists for an Associate Professor in Social Work to lead the coordination and teaching of undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level programs. You will demonstrate excellence in teaching, research and service. The teaching role will include teaching into the social work programs, driving development of new and innovative curricula, and being a Principal Supervisor Honours and HDR students. In research you will have a sustained record of outstanding research and in service you will have advanced relationships with industry, professional bodies, and the wider external social work community. 

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful for this opportunity, you will have completed a PhD in Social Work or cognate discipline, partnered with a sustained record of outstanding impact and achievement in teaching and research in Social Work. You will have international recognition in the area of expertise and an excellent record of publications in reputed refereed journal and presenting at conferences.

You will have the ability to successful lead a research team, with an excellent record of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing significant research funding from a range of external sources. You will have an established record of course coordination and in advancing the development and continuous innovation of new programs, curriculum design and course material in Social Work.

You will have an extensive record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful complete. Evidence of leadership in external activities and meaningful internal service roles is essential.

It is a requirement of this position that the incumbent is eligible for full membership of the AASW.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, continuing teaching and research position at Academic Level D.

At Academic Level D, base salary will be in the range $146,824 - $161,756, plus super of up to 17%. The total package will be in the range $171,784 - $189,254.

This role is a full-time position; however flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.
