Position Description

The Department of Classics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Ancient Greek Literature. The appointment will be made at the rank of Associate Professor, with an anticipated start date of 1 July 2027.

This position is being advertised concurrently with the Assistant Professor – Ancient Greek Literature (Req ID: 48736) position; however, only one appointment will be made.

Requirements and Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in Classics or a related field.
  • A clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.
  • A program of rigorous and innovative research at the highest international level, supported by a record of achievement appropriate to their career stage.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach both undergraduate and graduate students at all levels.

Undergraduate teaching responsibilities will include:

  • Translation-based courses in Ancient Greek Literature.
  • Ancient Greek language courses.

Candidates should also have:

  • Expertise in at least one additional ancient language.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • A demonstrated commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Evidence of Research Excellence

Evidence of excellence in research may include:

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Sustain and lead innovative, independent research.
  • Maintain an outstanding, externally funded research program.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Carry out assigned departmental and university service responsibilities.

Salary

  • Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • The salary for this position exceeds CAD $200,000 per annum.

Located in downtown Toronto, the Department of Classics is one of the largest and most diverse Classics departments in North America.

The Department is committed to a broad and pluralistic understanding of Classics, encompassing all aspects and approaches to Greco-Roman antiquity. It is internationally recognized for excellence across the full chronological and methodological scope of the discipline.
