Associate Professor of Molecular Virus

University of Copenhagen Department of Immunology and Microbiology

Associate Professor of "Molecular Virus - Host-cell Interactions in Vitro and in Vivo"

Department of Immunology and Microbiology
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen

The University seeks to appoint an associate professor to the Copenhagen Hepatitis C Program (CO-HEP) at the Department of Immunology and Microbiology to commence as soon as possible.

Information on the Department can be found at: https://sund.ku.dk/.

Job description

The field of study is virology with a special focus on molecular and cellular biology of viral infections. RNA viruses in particular are responsible for many important diseases and for novel or recurring outbreaks and should therefore be a major focus. It is expected that research will contribute to functional understanding of molecular interactions between virus and host-cells both at the protein and RNA level. Novel high-throughput and systems biology tools enable approaches not previously possible. It is expected that deep sequencing-based techniques could reveal novel insights to gene regulation and RNA interactions during viral infection in vitro and in vivo. Such methods include but are not limited to RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, cross-linking immunoprecipitation (CLIP), and RNA antisense precipitation (RAP). Analysis of virus-host interactions could be done in cell culture, in patient samples or in animal model systems for important human pathogens. Thus, it is expected that the candidate has a strong background in the molecular and cellular biology of viral infections in vitro and in vivo and has ambitions to drive an innovative approach using state-of-the-art methodology to uncover novel mechanisms of viral infection. It is also expected that bioinformatic approaches to the data will be implemented at a high level.

The associate professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments

Required qualifications

Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Find information about each criteria here: https://employment.ku.dk/faculty/criteria-for-recognising-merit.

Furthermore, each applicant must be able to document:

  • Research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an assistant professor/postdoc, but may also be obtained in other ways
