Associate Professor/Professor in Immersive Simulation

University of Leeds Institute for Transport Studies

Associate Professor / Professor in Immersive Simulation

Are you an academic with a strong track record in the development and use of Virtual Reality and human-in-the-loop simulation tools for studying user behaviour? Do you have experience operating within an agile and complex research environment, with a passion and specialism in investigating the interaction between people and emerging technologies, to improve the design of automated systems and future infrastructures? Are you interested in leading pioneering research and development, using the UK’s premier human-in-the-loop simulation facility?

The University of Leeds’s is a world-leading research facility, currently supporting over £10M of research funding, with a 25 years+ track record in research and innovation, using a suite of immersive, human-in-the-loop, simulation facilities (car, truck, pedestrian, bicycle). Supported by in-house software development, and managed by the multidisciplinary, multinational, members of the Human Factors and Safety Research Group at ITS, the facilities are used to address key societal questions in surface transport, such as human interaction with automated vehicles, the effect of user impairments on road safety, and behavioural aspects of vehicle emissions.

We are seeking to appoint a high-calibre, internationally-recognised, individual at either Associate Professor or Professor level with a passion for multidisciplinary research, to lead the research direction and priorities of Virtuocity and its team of developers, representing the facility, both internally and externally, with the opportunity to leverage Virtuocity as a platform for your own pioneering research.

Funding for Virtuocity is generated by academics from a range of faculties at Leeds, sourced from European and National funding organisations, and industrial collaborators. You will shape the ongoing development of Virtuocity, and lead the facility’s research strategy, to complement that of the wider Human Factors and Safety Research Group, working closely with other academics in Leeds, from related disciplines, collaborating with internal and external partners and clients. You will play a key role in maintaining the simulators’ international reputation of excellence at a technical level, ensuring the quality and impact of its research output continues to be world-leading in terms of originality, innovation, significance and rigour.
