The Saxo Institute, Faculty of Humanities, Copenhagen University (UCPH), Denmark, invites applications for a part-time associate professorship in Advanced Migration Studies to be filled by 1 January 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Saxo Institute seeks an outstanding researcher to fill a part-time position (50%) in Advanced Migration Studies at associate professorial level, to be based at the Institute’s Centre for Advanced Migration Studies (AMIS). We seek a strong candidate with a dynamic profile in the field of international migration studies, who can document an impressive track record of social science and/or humanities research on questions relating to moving populations and mobile practices and/or the geopolitics and management of migration and borders. Experience with research on migration and asylum in Denmark or the Nordic context will be considered an advantage. The successful applicant must document an original and compelling research plan, which complement and strengthen the research profile of AMIS. The candidate will be expected to play an active role in furthering AMIS’ profile and strategic plan. In particular, we are looking for an applicant with an excellent international record, demonstrating a capacity for working across various sectors with knowledge of different stakeholders and third sector collaboration. Documented experience in cultivating international research networks, involvement in collaborative research initiatives, and grant applications will be a distinct advantage. The associate professorship will be connected primarily to the international Master of Arts programme in Advanced Migration Studies, but the successful applicant must also be qualified in teaching in one or more of the undergraduate and graduate degree programs at the Saxo Institute.

The Saxo Institute is dedicated to the study of human societies past and present, with degree programs ranging from History to Ethnology, Archaeology, Classical Languages and Migration Studies. With some 1400 students and a staff of 100 employees, the Institute offers a variety of research and library facilities, servicing a vibrant community of tenured scholars, graduate students, visiting researchers and externally funded projects. The institute also hosts a range of leading research centres and externally funded research projects.

Centre for Advanced Migration Studies (AMIS) is an interdisciplinary centre for migration research established in 2013 as a strategic research priority at the Faculty of Humanities. The center’s research focuses on moving populations and mobility practices including irregularised and forced migration. AMIS promotes excellent research on a broad range of issues related to migration, combining a diversity of social science and humanities approaches, including history, ethnology, religion, philosophy, sociolinguistics, literary studies and the arts, and has a strong expertise in qualitative methods and ethnography.

Qualification requirements

In connection with the appointment of the position of associate professor, we emphasise that the applicant has research and teaching qualifications corresponding to what can be achieved by satisfactory employment as an associate professor. The successful applicant must have completed a PhD degree within a field relevant for advanced migration studies. The candidate is expected to have an academic standing showing internationally competitive research in the form of publications in renowned, peer-reviewed journals and/or books and edited volumes.

The applicant is expected to be able to take part in all the activities of the department, including examinations and administration, and to manage research projects, provide pedagogical supervision, support assistant professors and participate in academic assessment panels.

The duties of the position are evenly distributed on tasks related to teaching and tasks related to research (including relevant administration and knowledge-sharing). Hence the assessment of applicants’ qualifications will assign equal weight to documented competences in the field of teaching, pedagogy and didactics as in the field of research, research collaboration and research organization. Applicants with documentation of excellent teaching skills including experience with development of teaching and with experiences and reflections on how most effectively to integrate research and teaching activities will be given priority.

In addition, emphasis will be placed on the following professional and personal qualifications:

  • Research qualifications, which will be assessed in relation to the period of active research, the degree of originality, and academic output, e.g. number of publications published in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals or in comparable high-ranking series published with internationally recognized publishing houses. 
  • The applicant’s scientific record, academic breadth and depth, rigour, thoroughness, and accuracy.

Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Within a reasonable period of time (max. 2 years), non-Danish-speaking appointees are expected to acquire proficiency in Danish sufficient to be able to interact with colleagues and students.

Appointment procedure

After the application deadline, the Head of Department selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointment Committee.  All applicants are notified whether their application has been accepted for assessment. The Dean subsequently appoints an expert assessment committee tasked with carrying out an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee. Applicants are ultimately offered the opportunity of commenting on the part of the assessment relating to themselves before the appointment is finalized.

Salary and conditions of employment

Terms of appointment and salary will be in accordance with an agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The position is part-time. The salary range starts at DKK 20,054, (EUR 2,696) + a 17,1 % contribution to the pension scheme. It is possible to negotiate salary supplements on an annual basis.
