Associate Specialist – The Berkeley Evaluation and Assessment Research Center (BEAR) – Graduate School of Education

The Berkeley Evaluation and Assessment Research (BEAR) Center at UC Berkeley, established in 1994, is a complex research and service unit that conducts research on the integration of assessment (the measurement of individual students, teachers, schools, and other institutions) and evaluation (the use of such assessments to study educational and social intervention). The core of this research is the development and use of appropriate assessment methods for evaluating students, schools, and educational policy. The Center collaborates with researchers in universities nationally and internationally to develop software and other resources for constructing, managing, administering, and analyzing assessment.

The Center seeks applications for a 100% time, Associate Specialist who will oversee and perform data analyses, perform and write literature reviews, assist in the preparation of research proposals, manuscripts for publication, and conference presentations. Reporting to the Center Co-Directors, and working in coordination with other colleagues, graduate students, and members of the IT group as needed.


  • Attend regular internal staff meetings, and external client meetings, as needed
  • Performs analyses of data, and oversees and instructs Graduate Student Researchers in performing similar analyses
  • Manage detailed records of data, of analyses performed, and of decisions reached in the analysis process
  • Performs literature reviews
  • Writes technical reports and manuscripts for publications
  • Presents research results at professional meetings
  • Collaborate with BEAR Center staff and colleagues at other institutions to solve problems and produce innovative solutions

Minimum Qualifications (at the time of application)
• Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in education, psychology, with a focus on quantitative methodology or closely related field
  • Demonstrated experience in understanding of measurement and assessment issues and practices
  • Demonstrated understanding of educational issues such as child development, underserved populations, state and national educational standards, and similar
  • Demonstrated knowledge with item response models, hierarchical models, and other similar measurement and statistical models
  • Demonstrated experience with ConQuest, TAM, or similar item response modeling software, and with Stata or similar statistical package
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated excellent writing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and independently on issues and problems within the scope of the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external groups and managers.
