Position Description

The University of Washington (UW) is recruiting a full-time faculty member in Radiation Oncology on the clinician-educator pathway as an Associate or Full Professor WOT for the Breast Radiation Oncology service. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to build and engage with a world-class clinical and translational research program in breast oncology with support/infrastructure for a portfolio of novel, investigator-initiated clinical trials. Positive factors for consideration include but are not limited to proton therapy expertise.

The successful candidate will be proposed for appointment to the full-time faculty at the University of Washington on the clinician-educator pathway as an Associate or Full Professor (without tenure by reason of funding) with an anticipated start dates of July 1, 2023.  Associate and full professors WOT hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.  Appointment rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will be expected to advance the department's mission of clinical care, research, education, and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). Department Overview:

UW Medicine and its partner institutions (UWMC, Fred Hutch Cancer Center including its Proton Center, Seattle Children’s Hospital, VA Puget Sound, Harborview Hospital) provide an extensive and outstanding array of radiation oncology modalities for cancer patients. The Department of Radiation Oncology treats over 2,800 patients annually from a multi-state region covering over 25% of the U.S. geographic area. The University of Washington has the only Radiation Oncology department in North America that has clinical particle beam delivery systems for both proton and neutron therapy.  Our clinical approach is collaborative with numerous multidisciplinary clinics, tumor boards and disease specific chart rounds.  At UW Medicine patients with breast cancers are cared for in the multidisciplinary setting with twice a week multidisciplinary clinics and weekly breast tumor boards, as well as close clinical, research, and educational partnerships with the departments of Medical Oncology, Breast Surgical Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Radiology, and Pathology. We are a part of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and have strong translational and clinical research collaborations.  The Department has 29 physicians, 8 advanced practice providers, 26 physicists, and 3 research faculty.  Educational opportunities in our residency programs, fellowship programs and post-doctoral fellowships abound. A strong interest and commitment to research and education is expected, as well as strong collaboration with the multidisciplinary clinical teams. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

The metropolitan region is an urban area of 3.8 million people with a diverse population and an associated rich arts and cultural scene. Amenities include restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, cinema, live theater, live music, art, pop culture, a foodie scene, and urban homesteading. Seattle is the gateway to the great outdoors with hiking, camping, skiing, snowshoeing, sailing, kayaking, fishing, and whale watching within an hour of the city. Beyond the mountains to the west, there is the Pacific Ocean and, to the east, deserts, fruit, and wine country. The variety of neighborhoods within Seattle and surrounding areas offer a diversity of environments for families and single adults to call home, connected by bike commuting trails and a rapidly growing public transportation system. 

Qualifications

The successful applicant must have an MD or a DO, or foreign equivalent, and be board certified or eligible in Radiation Oncology with the American Board of Radiology (ABR); candidates who are ABR board eligible must become board certified within two years of faculty appointment.  The successful candidate must have a demonstrated record of clinical and scholarly excellence in breast cancer management.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-US) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
