Job Description

CERN's Product Lifecycle Management systems (PLM) manage Computer-Aided Design (CAD) data and technical documentation for the entire accelerator complex as well as the detectors of the Organization. We are now in a challenging project to replace the existing landscape of silo applications by a single modern PLM platform. This integrated set of tools contains information about millions of equipment components. In total, over 5000 users depend on the software provided by the group.

You will be working in a dynamic agile team and will be given the opportunity to specify, design and deliver functionalities that integrate and extend the use of the future PLM platform.

Typical application areas in which you will work include CAD Data Management, 3D Model Visualization including Virtual Reality, Engineering Document Management, integration with other Information Systems and Digital Twins. 

Your work will consist of:

  • building, maintaining, and operating the clustered infrastructure required to run CPU and GPU intensive jobs on CAD data;
  • building CAD and 3D transformation pipelines: export, simplification, conversion;
  • integrating CAD tools with 3D visualization technologies: web and native viewers, virtual/augmented reality;
  • extending CERN's new PLM platform using web, Java or .NET and CAD-specific technologies;
  • performing code review, testing, delivery and support of the software;
  • integrating and linking enterprise applications;
  • performing data analysis and data migration.

 

Qualifications

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
  • You have graduated, or are about to graduate, with a university degree (BSc or MSc level in computer science, engineering or another relevant course) and have no more than 4 years’ relevant experience after obtaining your degree;

Essential skills and experience:

  • Experience in designing and developing back-end applications using technologies such as .NET, Java, Python, NodeJS...;
  • Experience with SQL Database Management Systems;
  • Hands-on experience with continuous integration and deployment;
  • Hands-on experience in using version control systems inside a team (git, GitLab, GitHub).

Desired technical skills:

  • Knowledge of 3D and CAD concepts and file formats;
  • Constructive solid geometry: SketchUp, Catia, AutoCAD, Fusion 360, Free CAD;
  • Mesh modelling: Blender, Autodesk 3D Studio Max or similar tools;
  • Game, rendering and physics engines like Unity or Unreal Engine;
  • Experience in designing and developing front-end applications using technologies such as React or Angular, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS.

In return, CERN will provide you with:

  • An employment contract for between 6 months (minimum) up to 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months.
  • A stipend ranging from 5,281 to 6,558 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva.
  • 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
