Job description

Job summary

Imperial College London is one of the world’s great universities, renowned for its ground-breaking research, talented community of staff, students and alumni, and its international reach. Our mission is to achieve enduring excellence in research and education in science, engineering, medicine, and business, for the benefit of society.

The College was founded in 1907 in South Kensington, bringing together nineteenth-century institutions including the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines, and City and Guilds College. Today, Imperial provides globally leading education in STEM subjects for more than 19,000 students, over half of whom come from overseas, reflecting its status as the UK’s most international university. Its alumni and members also include 14 Nobel laureates and three Fields Medallists.

Imperial’s Faculty of Medicine is the top-ranked faculty of medicine in the UK in research (based on REF 2021) and one of the leading faculties in the world (based on Times Higher Educational Supplement’s World University Subject Rankings 2023 in Clinical and Health). It is one of the largest centres of medicine in Europe with world-leading research strengths in Public and Population Health, Infectious Diseases, and Respiratory and Cardiovascular Medicine. With more than 3,700 students, the Faculty plays an important role in educating and training doctors and other medical professionals and is deeply committed to ensuring student experience remains a key focus of its educational offering. Testament to this, the Faculty’s Medicine (MBBS) programme is the highest rated medicine programme in London.

It is in this context that we are seeking to recruit our next Dean of the Faculty. As Dean, you will be the accountable officer for all activity within medicine at Imperial College London. Providing the highest level of strategic planning and co-ordination, the Dean will promote excellence in research and education and be responsible for all aspects of the Faculty's operations and finances, as well as leading the Faculty’s circa 2,500 staff. You will work collaboratively and develop strong external relationships with NHS and medical institute partners, as well as with the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and the University of Cumbria. As a member of the College's senior management team, you will also make a significant contribution to the strategic direction, management, and development of Imperial College London as a whole.

The incoming Dean will be a highly experienced leader in academic medicine with proven ability to nurture and sustain high levels of performance across education, research and translation in a large medical school or faculty. You will be distinguished and internationally recognised in your field, and ready to head the executive team of a world-leading Faculty of Medicine. The ability to work collaboratively, and to develop and maintain strong internal and external relationships are pre-requisites.
