The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Chemical Biology.


  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of Chemical Biology. In this project you will use interdisciplinary strategies ranging from synthetic chemistry to microbiology in order to investigate how pathogenic bacteria manipulate the human immune system during infection. You will develop a new method for identification of yet unknown bacterial proteins and metabolites involved in immune-pathogen interactions. The newly discovered microbial factors will possess novel targets for anti-microbial or anti-virulence therapy. The project involves synthesis and application of chemical probes (activity-based probes) for monitoring proteases, recombinant protein expression, assay development, culturing of BSL2 pathogens, isolation and identification of bacterial metabolites and proteomics.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Medicinal Chemistry research group.


  • You hold a Master degree in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, bioengineering or in related fields, or you will have obtained it by the time you start work. Final year Master students can apply as well.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • Practical experience in chemical synthesis is recommended.
  • Your written and spoken English skills are very good
  • You are able to work interdisciplinary and independently.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is flexible (from March 2023 onwards).
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at the campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
