Your Task / Aufgaben
In the Sabass group, we study working principles of life from a physics perspective. Currently, our main research topic is the stochastic micromechanics of cells. Cellular micromechanics plays a ubiquitous role in biology, for example, for pathogen migration, host invasion, and cancer metastasis. Sensing- and control mechanisms are usually central. Our aim is to elucidate the principles governing the regulation of cellular micromechanics, such as a tradeoff between control and emergence, optimization of performance, or robustness.

Our group is located at a laboratory with biosafety level 2 and we have the rare opportunity to combine experiments on pathogens with biophysical modeling. Moreover, we work in close collaboration with biologists and medical researchers at LMU, across Europe, and worldwide.

We offer a Doctoral student position (m/w/d) in experimental biophysics starting at the earliest possible date. Salary and benefits depend on experience and seniority and are calculated according to TV-L E13 (50%-75%). The focus of the thesis project will be on the development of super-resolution microscopy methods for quantifying cellular micromechanics. You will become familiar with microfluidics, work with high-end microscopy setups, and develop image analysis software. Additionally, the laboratory will offer you the opportunity to gain experience with techniques from microbiology, including cell culture and bacterial genetics.

Requirements / Anforderungen

To participate in our work, we expect the following from a successful applicant:

• High motivation and commitment to achieving scientific excellence through hard work
• Master’s Degree in Physics, Biophysics, Biochemistry or comparable
• Some laboratory-work experience
• Experience with advanced microscopy imaging is a plus (Confocal, TIRF, SR, etc.)
• Experience with Microbiology or the Genetic toolbox is a plus
• Excellent command of the English language
