The Centre for Research and Innovation in Care (CRIC) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of healthcare services research for young people with a chronic condition


  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis with the aim to develop, implement and evaluate a multidisciplinary team (MDT) transition program serving as a prototype addressing challenges encountered by young patients, diagnosed with common chronic childhood-onset conditions- such as asthma, diabetes type I, and obesity- transitioning to adulthood. This PhD project aims to address the following set of objectives: (i) to develop a prototype of a MDT transition program for young adults with diabetes type I, asthma and obesity, using an Experience-Based Co-Design (EBCD) methodology; and (ii) to evaluate the impact this MDT transition program prototype in terms of clinical effectiveness, cost effectiveness and user experiences.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project and are engaged in science communication through a variety of communication channels.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks within the training trajectories of medicine, nursing and/or midwifery at the University of Antwerp.


  • You hold a Master degree in one of the following disciplines: medicine, nursing, midwifery, healthcare management and policy, health promotion or biomedical sciences or you will have obtained it by the time you start working.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You have a special interest in organisation of healthcare services, chronic care management and pediatrics and demonstrate a strong motivation to develop your set of competencies in terms of scientific research, including both quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
  • You have an excellent understanding of Dutch and English, in written and spoken form.
  • You have excellent analytical skills and demonstrate a critical mind-set, which you can apply when performing scientific research.
  • You demonstrate excellent skills in project management, entrepreneurship, are able to work systematically and independently, and are able to engage others to participate in research, provide input based on their expertise, to actively participate in multidisciplinary discussions, …
  • You can deal with changes, are flexible and demonstrate a great problem-solving ability.
  • You are a team player and advocate for multidisciplinary collaboration both in terms of clinical work, as well as scientific research.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for an initial period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is Oct 1st, 2022 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
