Position description

Reporting to the College of Agricultural and Environmental (CAES) Dean, the Director of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute will provide academic and administrative leadership to integrate agricultural sustainability research across CAES and the UC Davis campus. The Director will provide leadership in developing the vision and strategic planning activities associated with the growth and development of the institute. The Director, who will also be appointed to the W.K. Kellogg Endowed Chair in Sustainable Food Systems, will work with campus faculty and with UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR), international, federal, state, and regional agencies and nonprofit organizations to develop a cross-disciplinary research agenda that addresses key challenges related to agricultural and food system sustainability. They will work to bring together diverse researchers to share and disseminate research about agricultural and food system sustainability. This position will also coordinate activities with the leadership of the Student Farm and Russell Ranch Sustainable Agriculture Facility that includes the current Century Experiment.

The mission of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute (ASI) is to ensure access to healthy food and to promote the vitality of agriculture today and for future generations. This mission, and the role of the W.K. Kellogg Endowed Chair in Sustainable Food Systems, is accomplished by facilitating integrative research, education, communication, and early action on big, emerging issues. The Institute partners with sustainability researchers at other U.S. institutions through the Inter-institutional Network for Food, Agriculture and Sustainability (INFAS), as well as drawing on the expertise of more than 70 UC Davis faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate student researchers, and undergraduate student assistants. ASI partners with small-scale farmers, ranchers, agribusiness, non-profits, policy makers, and local communities to ensure that the institute’s research and teaching are responsive to the needs of the people of California and the world.

The Chair and Director will be the UC Davis representative to INFAS, a national network of university and college educators, researchers, and activists, representing 26 institutions and spanning 20 states, who collaborate in analysis, synthesis, and problem-solving with practitioners to increase U.S. food-system resilience; to illuminate critical trends and common stewardship of public goods essential for food systems, such as water, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and public institutions; and to reduce inequity and vulnerability in the U.S. food system. UC Davis, via ASI, serves as host for the endowed funding for this organization.

Appointment as the ASI director and W.K. Kellogg Endowed Chair in Sustainable Food Systems carries the following responsibilities and expectations in alignment with the 2005 agreement with W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the establishment of the ASI and W.K. Kellogg Endowed Chair in Sustainable Food Systems: 1) Identify the principles and practices that contribute to sustainability of agricultural and natural resource systems, 2) Establish communication channels that will permit a meaningful role for stakeholders in identifying and helping to find solutions to problems relating to sustainability, 3) Disseminate information, developed through research at UC Davis and elsewhere, to assist decision makers, scientists, and practitioners to improve the sustainability of agriculture and natural resources, 4) Assist California's rural and urban communities and policy makers in understanding and implementing sustainable food and agricultural systems and natural resource management, and 5) Educate students in the principles and practices of sustainability, exposing them to a variety of viewpoints and educational methods.

The ASI director will report directly to the Dean for all matters related to the ASI and the Dean will evaluate the role of the Director annually based upon the performance expectations outlined in the Statement of ASI Director Expectations (see below). Additionally, in accordance with the UC Davis policy, all endowed chair holders are regularly reviewed at 5 year intervals to assess their achievements and meeting the expectations of the chair endowment; specifically for the W.K. Kellogg Endowed Chair in Sustainable Food Systems the expectations are to meet those of the ASI. The ASI itself will undergo a comprehensive review every 5 years to assess the productivity, effectiveness, efficiency and impact of Institute/Center activities; the value an Institute/Center brings to faculty, departments, the college and stakeholders; and the strategic plan to ensure that goals and activities align with the college mission.

The Director of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute will be both a Professor within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the holder of the WK Kellogg Endowed Chair in Sustainable Food Systems. It is expected these will be fully complementary roles.

Below outlines the expectations of effort for the Director appointment. These performance expectations will form the basis of the annual evaluation of the Director by the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Service within the University and in Professional Societies as Director-80%
As Director of the ASI, responsibilities include overseeing and coordinating the ASI activities of research, teaching, and outreach programs; supervising staff associated with the ASI; facilitating the ASI leadership team; and serving as a liaison between ASI affiliated faculty and programs and the appropriate UC Davis administrators, NGOs and the ASI Board. Has major responsibility in developing a stable and ongoing funding base for work associated with the ASI and strengthening the ASI infrastructure. Together these efforts represent 75% of the Director activities. The Director is also expected to be engaged in service to the department, College, University, and professional societies, as appropriate, for the needs of the ASI and as opportunities arise; the service component comprises 5% of the Director’s activities.

Discovery of Knowledge through Discipline-Guided Inquiry-10%
Research has expanded across various aspects of the food system and the ASI work has expanded as well. Projects now include supply chain, societal benefits to local food systems from various perspectives, crop and animal integration, and also has included issues of reducing waste in food systems. The Director will actively engage in discipline-guided inquiry directly relevant to the ASI and in alignment with their professorial appointment.

Extension and Engagement with Constituencies outside the University-10%
Expected duties include facilitating statewide meetings and trainings around local food systems, organizing board and stakeholder meetings, working with the local Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) community in programs relating to local food systems, and presenting invited talks at national and international meetings.

• Academic Senate appointment at the advanced associate (Step 3 or higher) or full Professor level within CAES at UC Davis.
• Distinguished record of accomplishment of scholarly publication and teaching in agriculture, community food systems, agronomy or a related discipline, with excellent potential for advancing the role of the Kellogg Chair and mission of ASI.
• Understanding of trends and issues in agriculture, sustainability, and global change, and funding and politics surrounding these topics.
• Leadership, management or administrative record of accomplishment, preferably with prior experience in developing or overseeing multi-faceted, interdisciplinary research enterprises within a university.
• Experience developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships among stakeholders and partners including campus faculty, industry, government and the non-profit sector.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation and public speaking skills to work with others in a collegial atmosphere and represent UC Davis in public forums.
• Experience in grant writing/proposal development and the acquisition of extramural funding.

This will be an internal search, limited to faculty members in CAES. The successful candidate will retain their current UC Davis professorial appointment in their current department, while being appointed as a Director for 30% of their appointment, reporting directly to the Dean. The Director will be appointed to the W.K. Kellogg Endowed Chair in Sustainable Food Systems. The term of the Director and Endowed Chair appointments is five years. It is expected that the appointee’s research, teaching, and outreach efforts of their professorial appointment will align directly with the ASI objectives and their appointment as the ASI Director and holder of the W.K. Kellogg Endowed Chair of Sustainable Food Systems.
