UW Continuum College (UWC2) has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time instructor to teach Business Strategy Implementation, Spring Quarter 2022 (late March through June). Instructors serve a key role in certificate programs, engaging with students, serving as subject matter experts, presenting learning content, and assessing whether learners have achieved course competencies. The 10-week, three-hours-per-week class sessions will be taught in a real-time online format via Zoom. PCE students consistently say that the instructor is the single most important element of their course. 

In addition to teaching and in consultation with the program developer, the instructor may also take on the role of Course Developer, providing subject matter expertise while creating/revising course content. A program curriculum map will guide development and provide an overview of what each lesson will cover.  The overview of the lesson topics is provided below. The course development piece is a separate paid activity and will begin in September 2021 and conclude in January 2022.

About the Certificate in Business Strategy and Decision-Making Program

This three-course certificate program is targeted toward mid-career professionals who have some experience leading teams or aspire to do so in their next career move. Course content is oriented broadly to encompass concepts and examples with relevance across industries/sectors, presented in context of key socio-economic trends such as sustainability, diversity, equity & inclusion, and social justice. Upon completion of the program, students will have achieved familiarity with how to structure and execute decision analysis, develop and implement strategic plans, and adapt to change.

Following is a description of the three courses in this program. We are seeking an instructor for Course Two – Business Strategy Implementation.

Course One - Foundations of Business Strategy & Planning
The first course focuses on building a foundational understanding of the essential elements contained in an organization’s strategic plan and leveraging strategy and decision frameworks to organize information, conduct analysis and develop insights. The course concludes with activities that lead to constructing a strategic plan based on research, insights, and stakeholder input.

Course Two - Business Strategy Implementation
Managing teams and team goals that are aligned with strategic priorities can have a lasting impact on accomplishing strategic goals. It requires leaders who can monitor and regularly communicate progress, perform root-cause analyses, and recommend mitigation steps to address performance issues. Students will be equipped to Identify qualitative and quantitative risk factors when forecasting future performance so they can leverage performance management insights and recommend improvements to existing plans.

Course Three - Business Strategy Evaluation and Managing Disruptions
While learning how to assemble and implement a strategic plan is an important goal of the program, the primary purpose for learning about strategy and decision frameworks is to give students the opportunity to adapt to disruptions, friction, and change which is what the third course is all about. The ability to evaluate and revise existing priorities, strategies and plans based on new information is a critical asset to decision-makers. Ultimately, recommending actions to increase organizational resilience to future change, and gaining support for higher confidence plans will be key to organizational success.

Course Development Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the design team (instructional designer and program manager), create high quality course content aligned with an existing curriculum plan. Content includes:
    • Readings and external resources
    • Assessments (e.g. quizzes, knowledge checks, exams, projects, and rubrics for grading)
    • Assignments
    • Activities
    • Slide presentations with notes
    • Other possible content: video and/or audio recordings
  • In collaboration with the design team, align the content with the real-time online format 
  • Complete all deliverables on time as outlined and agreed upon in the final contract and statement of work 
  • Respond to feedback from UWC² staff and subject matter expert reviewers 
  • Participate in an initial project kick-off meeting 
  • Participate in a weekly virtual check-in meeting and working meetings as needed  

Online Classroom Responsibilities

  • Ability to teach all class sessions at the scheduled weeknight time, grade assignments, and respond to student inquiries in a timely manner. Expectations during the course comprise a minimum of three hours of weekly instruction and approximately five hours of weekly lesson preparation, student interaction, and grading outside of class time.
  • Coordinate with other instructors in the certificate program, to ensure curriculum continuity.
  • Adapt instructional techniques based on feedback and implement sound pedagogical practices.
  • A willingness to teach with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of professionalism, punctuality, and content relevance for diverse adult students.
  • Participate in one-to-two instructor meetings throughout the year.
  • Complete an online instructor onboarding module and relevant learning technology training.
  • Participate in weekly check-ins with co-instructors and/or instructional assistants for the duration of the course.UWC² contracts for course development and instructional activities are dependent on successful outcomes of prior UWC² contracts.

UWC2 Extension Lecturers / Instructors are Academic Staff, not faculty. These are part-time, temporary positions. 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum five years of professional experience relevant to the course topics.
  • Thorough understanding of business strategy and decision-making theory and practical application of those theories
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability, and desire, to successfully work with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Willingness to teach with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of professionalism, punctuality, and content relevance for diverse adult students.
  • Legal authorization to work and receive compensation in the United States.

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters in relevant field.
  • Prior teaching or mentoring experience, particularly with adult learners.
  • Prior experience teaching/presenting in an online environment.
