Position description

The American Language Center (International Program) at UCLA Extension offers high-quality English language training for professionals and university bound students. Applicants are invited to apply to teach a range of online synchronous and asynchronous courses as well as face-to-face courses.

SPECIFIC INSTRUCTOR DUTIES

  • Prepare and execute lesson plans in keeping with the course title and description, course objectives, and student learning outcomes of assigned courses.
  • Assess student characteristics, needs, interests, and learning styles and develop new course materials and activities in order to maximize the effectiveness of instruction.
  • Revise lessons to include information and topics which are current and relevant for international students. Update teaching methodology to reflect current technology and developments in second language teaching.
  • Hold conferences with students as needed to address individual needs.
  • Evaluate all students in courses assigned during the first few days of the program to determine that students are appropriately placed. Initiate class changes if students are not appropriately placed.
  • Assign homework regularly; correct it and return it promptly to the students.
  • Coordinate instruction and materials with other instructors.

REQUIRED GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), or Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field.
  • 3 years teaching experience in intensive English programs including college-based IEPs.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching a wide range of ESL levels and skills
  • Curriculum and materials development
  • Teaching writing and critical thinking for academic and professional purposes
  • Proficiency in the interactive use of instructional technology
  • Proficiency in teaching synchronous and asynchronous online courses
  • Familiarity with a Learning Management System (e.g. Canvas)
  • In addition to the above qualifications, the preferred candidate also has knowledge of or previous formal study of a second language and experience living or studying overseas.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Content-Based Instruction
  • English for Specific Purposes (e.g. Business, Law, Engineering, Medicine)
  • University preparation courses
  • Preparing students for TOEFL or IELTS; SAT, GRE, and/or GMAT
  • Project-based instruction
  • Experience teaching high-school students
  • Program coordination/administration
  • Language proficiency assessment, testing and test development
  • Active involvement in the field (TESOL, CATESOL)
  • Organizing extracurricular student activities

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  1. Positions are contingent upon student enrollment, i.e., often not confirmed until close to program commencement. 2.. Assignments vary from 4 to 20 hours per week. While most courses are offered between 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.(PST), some online courses are scheduled in shifts to accommodate a variety of time zones (e.g. before 9 am and between 4pm- 10 pm PST).

Because Extension is a division within UCLA, all Extension Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are “by agreement.” The instructor’s Contract outlines the deliverables for the course, he course schedule, and the compensation terms, subject to Extension policies and procedures. UCLA Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed Instructor Contract. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be canceled for any reason, the Instructor Contract, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.
