Position description

Dr. Michael Beyeler, PI of the Bionic Vision Lab (http://bionicvisionlab.org) in the Departments of Computer Science and Psychological & Brain Sciences at UC Santa Barbara, invites applications for a full-time position of a qualified Junior Specialist. The salary is based on UCSB's salary scales. This person will enable research as part of a team and, depending on experience level, may also conduct some independent research projects. The Bionic Vision Lab uses computational and experimental paradigms to elucidate the science behind bionic technologies that may one day restore useful vision to people living with incurable blindness.
Primary research duty is two-fold: 1) the collection of behavioral data by interacting with blind individuals implanted with the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System at our participating sites (Johns Hopkins University and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor), 2) the facilitation of visual psychophysics study at UC Santa Barbara. Under the direction of the PI, this also includes recruiting participants for experiments, preparing stimulus presentation scripts, computer programming and configuring test computers for behavioral testing, writing and editing code to process, analyze, and visualize experimental data, and assisting the research team in processing and analyzing data from these experiments. Additional responsibilities include training undergraduate research assistants, tracking study progress, and some administrative duties (e.g., IRB protocol management and overseeing lab operations).

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • A BA/BS or be enrolled in a BA/BS program in psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, biomedical sciences, or a related field at the time of application.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

• A BA/BS degree in psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, biomedical sciences, or a related field must be conferred by the time of appointment

• 6+ months of experience running human behavioral studies

Preferred qualifications

•Visual psychophysics (particularly with elderly and/or clinical populations)
• Programming (particularly MATLAB and/or Python)
• The ability to work independently, efficiently, and comfortably in a multidisciplinary team environment; exceptional organization and problem-solving skills; attention to detail; excellent written and verbal communication; a strong work ethic
