Lecturer in Biology

University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences

The Department of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania seeks to hire two dedicated and experienced full-time lecturers to start in the summer of 2024. These lecturers would serve undergraduate students primarily in the College of Arts and Sciences and graduate students in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. The initial appointment is for 11 months; however contingent upon funding, satisfactory performance review and approval of the Dean, we anticipate this to be an ongoing appointment, renewable on an annual basis. During the first year, the lecturers would be involved in a mixture of training, course development and teaching. In subsequent years, each lecturer would teach 2 courses per semester (4 per year) split between the introductory biology series (required by most students in the biology major), and biology courses appropriate for several different graduate programs in Bioengineering and Biotechnology.

The lecturers will be mentored by faculty in the Department of Biology, the Department of Bioengineering and the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in both course development and teaching. Lecturers will also receive teaching support and training in pedagogy from the Penn Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Innovation.

Ideal candidates will hold a PhD in Biology or a related field and have post-doctoral teaching and research experience. Individuals able to teach courses in bioinformatics and/or quantitative biology will be given preference as will individuals with training in pedagogy and evidence-based course design.  We seek applicants who share the mission of the Department of Biology in pursuing fundamental knowledge and improving society through research, education, and innovation. As a group with a shared mission, we believe that a diverse work force leads to a rich educational environment where our students feel supported and empowered to succeed. Successful applicants will share these values.
