Position Description

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington is seeking applications from qualified candidates for part-time non-tenure track position, 9 month service period, to teach one or more courses during Autumn, Winter, and/or Spring quarters of the 2020-2021 academic year. Appointments may be for multiple years (1-5 years) contingent on funding. Part-time lecturers are non-voting members of the UW faculty. 

The successful candidate(s) will teach undergraduate courses in one or more of the following topics: Dinosaurs, Pre-historic Life, Paleontology, and other courses linked to geo-science and earth life.

The position requires on-site face-to-face availability for course instruction, and teaching assignments may include days and/or evenings. Teaching excellence is the norm and is expected of all successful candidates. General responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and delivering rigorous course content that meets the academic standards befitting the University of Washington
  • Ensuring that delivery of all course materialsUsing appropriate and effective teaching strategies and student evaluation methods
    • fits the catalog course description
    • meets the stated learning goals for each course
    • aligns with existing standards (text books, tools, etc.)
  • Informing students of all course requirements and providing feedback on a continuing basis
  • Holding regular office hours
  • Using appropriate technology for the course
  • Submitting course grades by the deadline.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD (or foreign equivalent) in the Earth Sciences, or in an appropriately related field. Candidates should have an aptitude for geo-science and earth life including area focused in Dinosaurs, Pre-historic Life, or Paleontology.
