About the Role

The Department of History at the University of Botswana invites applications for Lecturer and Senior Lecturer positions. The successful candidates will:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses, including (but not limited to):

    • Civilisation and Modernisation in China and Japan

    • Independence and Colonialism in South Asia

    • Civilisations of the Ancient Near East and Mediterranean

    • Historical Research Methods and Historiography of Botswana

    • History and Political Economy of Land in Botswana

    • Philosophy of History

    • Research Proposal for Dissertation

  • Supervise and assess undergraduate and postgraduate research projects

  • Undertake other duties and responsibilities assigned by supervisors

The Department reserves the right to allocate additional courses as needed.


Requirements – Senior Lecturer

Candidates must have:

  • PhD in History or related discipline

  • Master’s degree in History or related discipline

  • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience at a university or comparable institution

  • Excellent and sustained research record, including at least 6 research outputs, of which 4 must be refereed journal articles in internationally recognized databases. Remaining outputs may include book chapters, conference proceedings, or an academic book (equivalent to 4 articles depending on publisher quality)

  • Sustained research output: minimum of 1 peer-reviewed publication every 2 years

  • Lead or single authorship in at least 2 refereed journal articles

  • Evidence of research impact (e.g., citations, h-index, patents, policy applications, prescribed texts, peer reviews)

  • Recognition at national research standing (e.g., reviewer for refereed journals, editorial board membership, keynote speaker at conferences)

  • Evidence of governance and social engagement

Desirable / Advantageous:

  • Sustained internally supported research activity

  • Research awards or other recognition

  • Examiner/moderator/assessor experience for undergraduate and/or postgraduate research

  • Demonstrated academic leadership, multi-disciplinary teaching, research, administration, or consultancy experience

  • Accreditation with the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) as Moderator and Assessor


Requirements – Lecturer

Candidates must have:

  • PhD in History or related field

  • Master’s degree in History or related field

  • Bachelor’s degree in History/Humanities (majoring in History) with at least a 2(i) pass or GPA ≥ 3.6 (or equivalent)

  • Evidence of engagement in research

Desirable / Advantageous:

  • Evidence of governance and social engagement

  • University teaching experience in History or a related field
