UCLA Principal Leadership Institute (PLI) lecturers teach graduate level candidates in the School of Education and Information Studies (GSEIS). Their primary responsibilities are to supervise fieldwork and teach courses in educational leadership practices. They guide candidates in completing the fieldwork component of the program to meet the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) Program Standards and the California Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (CPSELs) to qualify for the Administrative Services Credential. The PLI lecturers support candidates to prepare their submissions for the California Administrator Performance Assessments (Cal APA). In addition to supervising fieldwork, lecturers may teach one or more of the PLI methodology courses in developing leadership skills, pedagogies and dispositions in overseeing teaching and learning, supervising personnel, coaching teachers and staff, managing school operations, and leading data-driven decision making.

PLI lecturers/fieldwork supervisors are required to collaborate regularly with P-12 and their university colleagues, school site/district leadership personnel, and provide support to PLI candidates for a minimum of 40 hours per month. Fieldwork supervisors teach one fieldwork course (seminar) per quarter—fall, winter, spring--throughout the academic year. These seminars, led by the PLI fieldwork supervisors, provide opportunities for candidates to develop, implement and complete their leadership projects, fieldwork plans and the submission of the Cal APA assessment cycles.


PLI lecturers
1) supervise graduate-level candidates to earn a Preliminary Administrative Services Credential and a Master in Education. The PLI fieldwork supervisors/lecturers guide and monitor fieldwork experiences and may serve as instructors for methodology courses;
2) contribute to the development of the PLI program through active participation in PLI faculty meetings, candidate recruitment, candidate selection, PLI fieldwork meetings, accreditation activities, Center X and GSEIS department meetings, writing and obtaining grant funding, networking and collaborating with public school partners, and building relationships with community organizations;

3) report to the Director of the UCLA Principal Leadership Institute;
4) are evaluated quarterly by their candidates. They receive feedback annually from the local school partners--district and/or school site administrators--where their candidates practice, and they engage in evaluation conversations with the PLI Director;

5) are evaluated through a merit review every two years. PLI lecturers submit their file to the PLI Director, the Directors of Center X, and the Chair of the Department of Education.


PLI lecturers
1) must hold a valid California Administrative Services Credential. A Master of Education degree or equivalent is required, a doctorate is preferred;

2) must demonstrate a record of successful experiences as a K-12 principal/administrator and have substantial experiences in implementing educational reform in public urban schools, expertise at utilizing a racial justice approach, working knowledge of a theory-to-practice approach, and operationalize blending theory and practice in educational contexts;
3) must have knowledge and training in coaching and mentoring practices and must have demonstrated excellence in supervision of aspiring principals and/or principals.
