The promising young academic will be appointed in a full time, permanent position at lecturer level on a six-year developmental programme.  In the first three years of the programme, the appointee is given a reduced workload to allow him/her to complete a doctoral degree, if not yet completed by date of appointment. In addition, the appointee is mentored and supported as s/he is introduced to academic life particularly with regard to his/her teaching, research and engaged scholarship responsibilities.

Duties and responsibilities:

• Provide formal teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate students in Microbiology. Present practical laboratory sessions to students in Microbiology and Biochemistry Perform high quality research in the field of Microbiology.
• Supervise and provide consultation sessions for postgraduate students. Perform general administration duties as applicable at university level.
• Perform ad-hoc tasks as prescribed by the Head of the Department.
• Assist with the maintenance and operation of the department's research facilities.

Inherent requirements:

• A Master’s degree on NQF level 9 in Microbiology or closely related discipline passed with an average of 70% (attach academic record).
• Must enrol for a doctoral degree at the first available opportunity, if not yet attained by the time of the appointment.


• A PhD in Microbiology or closely related discipline.
• Proven experience in presentation of poster or oral presentations at conferences or equivalent activities.
• Provide evidence of published manuscripts or manuscripts in preparation that have the potential to be accepted for publication in accredited journals.
• A proven research record of published articles in ISi accredited journals.
• A proven record of accomplishment in under- and postgraduate lecturing or presenting practical laboratory sessions.
• Proven research expertise aligned to current research areas in Department.
