The Media Studies Department  of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is looking for a candidates to teach in the BA programme, specifically in the Media and Culture track. The candidates may also be asked to teach courses in related Master’s programmes. The candidates have expertise in contemporary theoretical and critical approaches within Media Studies and the Humanities more broadly, and is able to position themselves in the landscape of contemporary disciplinary developments.

What are you going to do

Lecturers are expected to be able to teach a variety of subjects in the Media and Culture BA, including courses in media research, media aesthetics and philosophy of the humanities. Teaching duties may also include mentoring students and supervising theses.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • developing, coordinating, and teaching courses within the Media and Culture BA, in cooperation with the staff of the Media and Culture programme;
  • playing an active role in the development and implementation of improvements and innovations in course pedagogy and content;
  • carrying out administrative tasks related to teaching;
  • attending team meetings and taking part in working groups;
  • supervising Bachelor’s and possibly Master’s theses.

What do we require

The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience with teaching and co-developing courses, and will be equally capable of teaching in a team or independently designing a syllabus.

Your experience and profile:

  • completed or nearly completed PhD in a related discipline;
  • several years of teaching experience at the university level, at BA and/or MA level;
  • demonstrable didactic abilities and/or training, evidenced by an educational portfolio;
  • experience working in digital and audio-visual learning environments;
  • organisational experience and skills;
  • collegiality and reliability;
  • excellent command of both Dutch and English. Non-native Dutch speakers must achieve an active and passive command of Dutch within two years
  • University Teaching Qualification, or willingness to acquire this within two years.

Our offer

We are hiring five lecturers for 19-26 hours per week. We offer a temporary contract for a period of two years with a trial period of two months, commencing preferably on 1 August 2021.  The UFO profile for this position is, dependent on relevant experience, Docent 4 (scale 10) or Docent 3 (scale 11).

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and relevant experience, ranges from €2,790 (start of scale 10) to €5,127 (end of scale 11). This is exclusive of 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
