Job description

The Banking & Finance Research Team in the Department of Economics at Ghent University (Belgium) is hiring a PhD researcher in the field of Financial Economics. The PhD researcher will conduct research in the context of an interdisciplinary four-year strategic basic research project aiming at improving the efficiency of pension saving decisions. The team consists of researchers from actuarial science, data science, (financial) economics and psychology. Together they address the problem of optimal pension savings product design, optimizing pension saving decisions and understanding actual saving behavior.

We are looking to strengthen the team with a PhD student who has a passion for research about goal-based optimization of the pension savings portfolio (this will include e.g. developing asset pricing models, predicting long-term pension income, constructing income distributions, implementing portfolio optimization over the life cycle, validation methods of long-term forecasts, etc.).

We offer a 4 years period doctoral position. The PhD researcher is required to prepare a PhD dissertation on this topic, under the supervision of Prof. Koen Inghelbrecht, Prof. Rudi Vander Vennet and Prof. Kris Boudt. The position comes with a monthly scholarship of approximately €2.070 (net), social security (health insurance and pension contributions), end-of-year and holiday bonus, travel and computer equipment resources, and other benefits.

Profile of the candidate

Candidates should hold a degree of Master of Science in economics, Master of Science in business economics, Master of Science in business engineering, Master of Science in business administration, Master of Science in mathematics or an equivalent master’s degree, or are about to obtain this degree by the end of the academic year. In addition to this degree, strong quantitative, modeling and programming skills are important. Next to research skills, also good social skills, and an entrepreneurial mindset is desirable as the project will also involve contacts with stakeholders.
