PhD Position in Microfluidic Nanoparticle Synthesis for Drug Delivery

This work will be carried out in the Group of Transport Phenomena and Multiphase Systems at KU Leuven under the supervision of Prof. Simon Kuhn. We also form part of the larger Process Engineering for Sustainable Systems (ProcESS) group at the Department of Chemical Engineering with expertise in process intensification, use of alternative energy sources and membrane technology.

Responsibilities

The application of nanoparticles in the clinical field has increased in recent years, which also includes the manufacturing of engineered nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery. For clinical applications, the properties of these nanoparticles need to be closely controlled during synthesis. For this purpose, microreaction technology is commonly applied.

To further improve particle properties, we will also apply ultrasound during synthesis. The research group has developed a wide range of ultrasound integrated flow reactors on the micro- and milli-scale. The aim of this project is to apply these reactors to emulsion-based synthesis of nanoparticles, which are then loaded with target molecules for drug delivery.

We are looking for a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher with a background in chemical engineering or chemistry. The successful candidate will be offered a post-doc position to become part of our international team with global research and industry links. Funding can be initially provided for a period of 1 year, with the option of extension to 2 years.

Profile

  • Requirement: PhD in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry
  • Knowledge of flow chemistry and ultrasound will be regarded as a plus
  • Adequate English (written and verbal communication)¬†for scientific interactions required
  • Strong motivation is a must
  • Willingness to work at interdisciplinary boundaries
