PhD Position in Molecular Biology

University of Gothenburg Faculty of Science

PhD Student in Molecular Biology: Protein Phase Separation and Aging

Diary id:PAR 2020/790

Employment level:Fixed term

Location:Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology

Apply by:2020-07-15

Beidong Liu group´s research interest is focused on deciphering mechanisms underlying the formation of membraneless originals (formed through protein phase separation) and their roles in aging and aging-related diseases by developing and applying novel high-content screening techniques using yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as a model system. The group is located on the medical campus, close to the Sahlgrenska Hospital in Gothenburg and interacts collaboratively with several local and international groups

Job assignments

The PhD student will be expected to carry out semi-independent research concerning the mechanisms underlying the interplay between the aging process and protein phase separation using yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as a model. The main assignments for the PhD student will be: Perform genome-wide screening experiments to identify novel protein phase separation targets, to genetically engineer target protein expressing strains, and to purify candidate proteins and evaluate their phase separation properties, to apply genetic, molecular biology and biochemistry approaches on deciphering mechanisms underlying the relationship between aging and protein phase separation.

Bioinformatics analyses of genomic data, or cheminformatics analyses of molecular structures may be included. Part of the task may also be to participate in developing experimental technology, e.g. for robotized high-throughput methods, or implementation of novel genetic engineering techniques.

The recruited PhD student will participate in seminars and internal group meetings, and in addition interact with other research groups in the department or abroad.

As this is an interdisciplinary project where we will consider applicants with different educational backgrounds, the precise project of the selected PhD candidate in this research program will be modified according to his/her scientific background and interest.

Eligibility

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements: A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:

  1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification,
  2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or
  3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

To meet the specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies, applicants must: (i) have a second-cycle (advanced-level) degree in a relevant* subject area in the natural sciences, or (ii) have completed studies for at least 60 higher education credits at a second-cycle level in relevant subject areas in the natural sciences, or (iii) have completed a corresponding program of relevance to the planned third-cycle program, in Sweden or in another country, or have equivalent qualifications.

*Relevant for the planned third-cycle education

The specific entry requirements also include an acceptable command of spoken and written English. Guidelines for assessing English proficiency may include a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL test (or 213 on the TOEFL-CBT, or 79 on the TOEFL-iBT).

Assessment

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:

Selection among applicants who fulfil the general and specific admission requirements for doctoral studies are based on the applicant´s ability to benefit from the education.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in SFS 1993:100.

The following aspects will be particularly considered in the evaluation process of applications:

A suitable educational background which should comprise one or more of the following areas: molecular biology, microbiology, synthetic biology, genomics, bioinformatics, high throughput molecular techniques including robotics, biomedicine, biochemistry, molecular modelling, structural biology, medicinal chemistry, pharmacy.

Prior experience from experimental or in silico work in any of the above areas is advantageous.

High motivation to pursue doctoral studies and ability to plan and organize own experiments.

Good ability to analyse and communicate scientific results, and to present both in oral and written form.

Interest to participate in an interdisciplinary international research project and interact with members of several research groups.

Applications will be evaluated by the main supervisor and co-supervisors, to select a top group of candidates. These will be interviewed, if required over Internet or phone.
