fixed-term for 2 years initially, with the possibility of extension.

Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) play a central role in liver regeneration and homeostasis; dysregulation of the underlying autophagy and self-renewal mechanisms can lead to liver degeneration and fibrosis. Arginase-1 (Arg1) regulates both the quiescent state of HSCs and their interplay with sinusoidal endothelial cells (SECs) in the space of Disse via control of NO synthesis and polyamine production. Using endothelial-specific Arg1 knockout mice, we investigate the functional role of these Arg1-mediated pathways in maintaining liver homeostasis.

Suitable candidates will have a Master's degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related field. Applicants should be highly motivated, enjoy interdisciplinary collaboration and be able to integrate well into our international team. You can look forward to an interdisciplinary PhD project at the interface of biochemistry, cell biology and pathophysiology, for which the following profile qualifies you:

  • Willingness to work with laboratory animals, as this is required for the experimental work – prior experience is not necessary
  • Strong interest in cell biology, liver pathophysiology and scientific research
  • English language skills of at least level B2 (C1 or higher preferred)

We offer excellent personal mentoring with regular one-on-one meetings, membership in an international and multilingual team, and access to a worldwide network of scientific collaborations.

Severely disabled applicants will be given preference in the case of equal qualification. Tübingen University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity and actively promotes gender equality. The University aims to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and therefore particularly encourages qualified women scientists to apply.

Please send your application with the usual documents (cover letter, CV, certificates) by 15.9.2026 in electronic form (as a single PDF file) to Univ.-Prof. Dr. Miriam Cortese-Krott miriam.cortese-krottspam prevention@uni-tuebingen.de, quoting the reference number Doktorand/Leberprojekt/Pharmakologie.

The appointment will be made by the Central Administration (Zentrale Verwaltung).
