PhD Position in Stem Cell Biology

Catholic University of Leuven Stem Cell Institute

The Stem Cell Institute, Leuven, was founded in 2006 with the aim to understand fundamental mechanisms underlying stem cell proliferation, differentiation and de-differentiation, using different models, with as ultimate goal to translate basic insights to clinical applications. The institute is part of a broad network of research groups at KU Leuven, with excellent expertise in cell biology, genetics, transcriptomics as well as biophysical characteristics of mammalian cells as well as in model organisms. The successful candidate will be part of a team consisting of multiple PhD students and postdocs.
The candidate will work in collaboration with the group of Prof. Lluis and Prof. Verfaillie.
We aim to differentiate human pluripotent stem cells into functional liver cells and liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) in order to finally obtain an in vitro 3D liver model. We will use RNA-seq data to screen for possible transcriptional factors and signal pathways to modulate in order to develop functional liver and endothelial cell models.

The successful candidate should
- hold a diploma or Master’s degree in cellular biology, biochemistry or bioengineering or related biomedical field, with excellent marks.
- have lab experience in molecular biology
- be structured and responsible
- contribute with enthusiasm to an ambitious and highly interdisciplinary team
- be fluent in written and spoken English.

- Full-time in-depth training in stem cell differentiation towards the obtention of a PhD degree.
- Training at the University of Leuven, of the top European Universities, providing an excellent research environment.
