Project

Personal mobility with the greatest possible independence is a basic right of people with disability as it is a window towards daily life participation and essential for well-being and quality of life. For people with complex movement disorders as dystonia and choreoathetosis in cerebral palsy, coordination is strongly disturbed due to uncontrolled and inconsistent movements of these neurological disorders. Therefore, wheelchair skills training is challenging due to the need for specialized wheelchair control equipment, and requires lengthy and tedious training routines. In this project, ‘Adaptive Rehabilitative Gaming Systems for Powered Mobility Training in People with Complex Movement Disorders (ADA Games)’,we will develop a game-based program for wheelchair skills training. Central in this PhD is the development of a wheelchair skills assessment and training program with focus on the suitability for implementation of an Adaptive Rehabilitative Gaming system and validate this together with therapists, care providers and other experts in the clinical field. This will offer the goal group a challenging yet rewarding training experience that contributes to long-term patient engagement, improved mobility, and quality of life.

The successful PhD candidate is expected to work in close collaboration with a second PhD researcher in Computer Sciences and Engineering Technology, young people with CP and care providers. The position is primarily situated in the Neurorehabilitation Lab at KU Leuven Campus Bruges under supervision of prof. dr. Elegast Monbaliu and will also be affiliated with the e-Media Research Lab at KU Leuven (prof. dr.Kathrin Gerling) and M-group at Campus Bruges (prof. dr. Hans Hallez).
