The Research Training Group RTG 2088 “Discovering Structure in Complex Data: Statistics Meets Optimization and Inverse Problems” (Speaker: Prof. Dr. Gerlind Plonka-Hoch) at the Georg-August University Göttingen offers

2 Ph.D. positions (all genders welcome)

for project B6 “Sparse adaptive multiscale representations of signals and images based on advanced exponential analysis methods” and B4 “Bayesian nonparametric adaptive estimation of Toeplitz covariance matrices” beginning as soon as possible for three years. The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale (E13 TV-L) with 75% of the regular working hours (currently 29.85 hours per week).

Project B6 investigates connections between numerical schemes for exponential analysis (finite rate of innovation or Prony methods) and non-convex optimization algorithms, in the context of sparse approximation of signals. Signal analysis algorithms of this type are of high interest for reconstruction and sparse representation of signals and images.

In project B4 we investigate the covariance matrices of stationary processes. Thereby, we aim to employ a Bayesian framework and impose smoothness on the spectral density by an appropriate prior. The asymptotic properties of the resulting estimators are to be studied.
