The Department of Earth Sciences has about 70 employees. We have Bachelor and Master’s programmes in Earth Sciences and in Geography as well as third-cycle education. Our strongest research areas lie within climatology, ecosystem sciences, petrology/geochemistry and applied geoscience. The research strategy for the department emphasizes on further development of Earth System Science.

Job assignments

The Regional Climate Group (RCG: ) is part of the Department of Earths Sciences at the University of Gothenburg. RCG studies climate at regional-to-global scales based on instrumental data, Global and Regional Climate Modelling, and paleoclimate proxy records. RCG has a unique profile within the Swedish climate research community, and an international reputation in the fields of regional climate analysis and modeling. RCG actively participates in a national strategic research program MERGE (ModElling the Regional and Global Earth system). To sustain the success in climate change research, RCG is seeking a researcher to join an ongoing research project, carrying out research on how regional climate change over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) influence the weather and climate in downstream and upstream regions.

Specifically, the successful candidate is expected to:

  1. Quantifying the TP’s climate changes in the past and understanding the

associated physical causes.

  1. Exploring the relationship between the TP’s climate and the weather/climate in downstream and upstream regions and uncovering the underlying mechanisms
  2. Validating historical climate simulations by developing/using long-term climate reconstructions.


To be successful in this position the applicant will need:

  • A PhD degree in meteorology or what the employer considers as a closely related field from within the last three years.
  • Demonstrate skill in Unix system, scientific programming and data visualization (e.g. Matlab or R) with large amount of data from instrumental observations, reanalyses and climate models.
  • Documented expertise with climate dynamics and regional climate across the globe, preferably through diagnostic analysis of reanalyses and global climate simulations.
  • Written and oral communication skills including an ability to publish research results, write reports, and make scientific presentations.


The postdoc position is for two year full-time (100%) placed at the Department of Earth Sciences, Gothenburg.
