The Life Cycle Engineering research group of the Mechanical Engineering Department of KU Leuven has a long and proven track record in ecodesign and LCE oriented research. With 3 faculty members, a number of postdocs and some 12 to 15 PhD students we cover a broad spectrum of research themes focusing on systematic environmental impact reduction of products and systems. In order to efficiently identify and optimally target impact reduction strategies, systematic use is made of LCA and LCC methods to quantify respectively the (avoided) environmental effects in different impact categories and the economic consequences of system changes. The research group takes a lead in sustainability improvement of manufacturing systems starting from in depth knowledge of manufacturing processes as available in the different specialised process development oriented research groups of the department (additive, subtractive, forming processes: see ). Special attention goes to industrial symbiosis principles that identify synergies between process categories, which allow to eliminate waste streams, and avoid losses and excessive energy requirements in conventional recycling flows.


The postdoc researcher will contribute in:
-   managing research projects and actively execute LCE related research activities
-   coordinating and compiling research proposals in this domain
-   publishing and presenting research results
-   guiding junior researchers  at master and PhD level
-   supporting educational work at master course level
For this purpose the candidate should have a PhD degree from an engineering domain relevant for the scope of the vacancy.


For the LCE research group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of KU Leuven ( ) we hire a postdoctoral researcher with extensive experience in life cycle assessment.  For this purpose fluency with existing software solutions for LCA, such as SimaPro, and related databases is required and familiarity with relevant standards like the ISO 14040 series and ISO 14955 is expected.

The research group is deeply involved in the environmental assessment and optimization of manufacturing systems.  Experience with unit process impact modelling is therefore important.
The candidate should have a visible publication track record proving his/her capabilities for publishing research output in well established journals.


We offer a postdoc position for a period of two years, possibly to be extended,  in a dynamic multidisciplinary team, supported by specialised research groups and laboratories offering expertise and infrastructure in the related domains relevant for the research in Industrial Symbiosis in Discrete Manufacturing. The research group wants to offer career development  opportunities for a young academic working on building a track record. The extensive international academic and industrial networks of the research group will facilitate this. The research work will be conducted in Leuven,  a vivid historic university town in the heart of Europe.
